How aerobic exercise fights alzheimer's in middle-aged adults. |Espresso Knowledge Shots

from Decoding Healthcare Research · host Agora Project

Alzheimer's disease is a growing public health concern, with no effective treatments currently available. Exercise has emerged as a promising lifestyle approach to maintain cognitive health and delay dementia onset. However, blood-based biomarkers are needed to evaluate how physical activity impacts the brain. Candidates like the myokine cathepsin B (CTSB), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), anti-aging protein klotho, and metabolites related to cognition have been proposed as potential exercise biomarkers. A study titled “Effects of Aerobic Exercise Training on Systemic Biomarkers and Cognition in Late Middle-Aged Adults at Risk for Alzheimer's Disease” by Gaitán and colleagues published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in 2021 examined how an aerobic exercise program affected these systemic factors in middle-aged adults at increased genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease. This randomized controlled trial conducted by Gaitán et al. provides insight into how regular physical activity could potentially help delay the onset of dementia. The study suggests some effects of exercise on systemic factors that may reflect beneficial changes in the brain. //~Social media~///: These episodes of 'Espresso Knowledge Shots' or quick paper reviews are also available on the 'Decoding Healthcare Research' Podcast.
