How and Why Teachers Go on Strike | Episode #28 - Jason Schilling

from Mr. Clarke After Dark · host Lucas Clarke

Jason Schilling is currently the President of Alberta Teachers Association and has been in the profession for twenty-seven years. On this episode, Jason and I discuss student/teacher violence, the classroom size cap not coming to Alberta despite being present in others, central bargaining vs. local bargaining, PECBA legislation and bargaining for what you would like to bargain for, how there are already solutions to major teacher issues but they are just not being listened to, what level students are being funded at compared to other provinces, teacher engagement, the teaching ’scope of practice,’ how we cannot just assess students out of learning gaps, changing expectations for teachers, that not every teacher has to do everything, blaming his parents for his decision to run for President, coping strategies teachers create after the death of a student, carrying the burden and guilt of an unfortunate incident with a student, grief pacing and processing secondary trauma, ‘lighting the torch,’ trying to contend with policy decisions during Covid, as well as the ‘tone change’ between the previous Lagrange Ministry and the Nicolaides Ministry, and, much more. Thank you for tuning in and hope you enjoy the show! Send us a textThoughts shared on the podcast are purely our own and do not represent the views of the Anglophone South School District or the relevant jurisdictions associated with my guests.
