How Denmark Outmaneuvered the Gestapo in 1943

In October 1943, ordinary Danish citizens and resistance networks spontaneously mobilized to hide and evacuate over 7,000 Jews to neutral Sweden after learning of an impending Gestapo roundup. While traditionally celebrated as a purely selfless rescue, modern scholarship highlights the active agency of the escaping Jews and the commercial reality of the crossings, which cost an estimated 20 million kroner. Despite the deep financial and emotional tolls, this collective defense of democratic values and human rights resulted in an extraordinary 98.5% survival rate for Denmark’s Jewish population.
