I have a question. This question has been tumbling around in my brain for 40 years. How did “human” Jesus know who he was? I asked people. I asked my mom. I asked the church leaders. They said, “God told him” or “he just knew” or “maybe he will tell you that when you get to paradise”. As I grew and became an adult—the answers expanded to include “well, he was God in the flesh-how could he not know” and other similar answers that were all based on how people understood and expressed their interpretation of the “Jesus Story”. And I struggled to accept these answers because I was being asked to “be like Jesus”. How can I ever “be like Jesus” when I don’t have the tools he had? I felt like I was being set up for failure. I also could not see how “human” Jesus had any free will if he was just being guided and handheld and went through the motions of being human just to have that experience. I survived some terrible times in my late teens and early 20s, after being excommunicated and shunned from one high control group and being recruited into a different high control group by people I knew and trusted. My relationship with God became nonexistent. There was no active participation on my part. The “Golden Rule” became my way to live and that was all I could do as I recovered and tried to undo the programming from the high control groups and recover from the abusive situations I found myself in because the cult programming made my situations seem “normal”. And the question still tumbled around in my head: How did “human” Jesus know who he was? I truly enjoyed sharing and talking about this with my friend and partner, Monica Artrip, who is the tech person behind the scenes for Healing Forward Support.
