How PETA Saved 4000 Dogs (with Alka Chandna)
from The Simple Heart w/ Wayne Hsiung · host Wayne Hsiung
On June 3, 2024, one of the largest dog research and breeding facilities, Envigo, was fined a record $22 million for violating federal animal welfare laws. As a result of the same proceeding, 4000 dogs were saved from life in a cage – or, worse, death at the hands of a vivisector in a lab. It’s been one of the biggest victories in animal rights history. But how did it happen? Dr. Alka Chandna, a Vice President of Lab Investigations at PETA, was crucial to the fight against Envigo, and she breaks down how the animal rights advocates won. It’s a story of brave undercover investigators; principled government officials (which is exceedingly rare); and, above all, a relentless campaign by tireless activists. But the lessons from this win apply far beyond one lab. And, as we get closer to a key hearing, I ask the question: What can we learn from the Envigo victory that will help us save, not just 4000 dogs, but them all? - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alkachandna/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/alka1963 XTwitter: https://x.com/alkac1 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alkachandna/ PETA: https://www.peta.org/RMD https://www.peta.org/investigations/ - The Simple Heart on Substack - Subscribe to Wayne Hsiung's newsletter to learn more about the #RightToRescue at https://simpleheart.org! - Chapters: Chapter 1 00:00-34:51 Intro, PETA, Envigo Dog Rescue Case, history of the company (Envigo/Covance) with monkey testing, investigations, & politics Chapter 2 34:52-1:08:29 The Envigo Dog Rescue Case continued, treatment of animals in labs, & people that test on animals Chapter 3 1:08:30-1:32:25 Human psychology, the myth of “necessary evils” from companies, the Envigo Dog Rescue Case investigation in 2021, & Envigo shutting down in 2022 Chapter 4 1:32:26-1:50:46 Settlement against Envigo in court for animals, systemic betrayal of the public & the animals, & fighting for justice Chapter 5 1:50:47-2:01:03 Final thoughts: advice for Ridglan Special Prosecutor Hearing, decreasing requirements of testing on animals, & seeing adopted rescued animals Chapter 6 2:01:04-2:01:20 Outro video - Thank you for watching!
