How To Alchemize Unsolicited Advice

from Just This · host Amanda Scharpf

We all know how hard it is to get advice from someone (or lots of people) when really we just need to be supported in other ways. Being in this situation through a conception, pregnancy or parenting journey can fell 10 times harder and also be 10 times more triggering. Unsolicited advice is unavoidable, but can be greatly reduced and easier to navigate if we can set boundaries, trust our intuition and learn to not take it all in. This convo dives deeper into the topic and gives some practical tips and tools for those moments where you find yourself on the receiving end of advice may or may not have asked for. Some of the topics we explore in this episode include: practicing communicating boundaries honoring our feelings and body and trusting our intuition examples of unsolicited advice coming up with your phrase to respond to unsolicited advice and practicing them how we are more tender to words in our postpartum phase writing down what triggers you so you can see patterns and find tools to help support your boundaries in specific areas knowing that you can take or leave any advice you get - use what feels good and works for you tips for advice from medical professionals handling advice from online and virtual spaces picking your top ‘go-to’ people for who you trust or will go to for advice tips for giving advice to a person on their parenting journey Some quick example phrases for unsolicited advice: Thank you, but I’ve got this. I appreciate how much you care, but this is what works best for us. Thanks for your advice. I’ll give it some thought. When in doubt — change the subject :)  Resources: future episode on unsolicited touch (to be released soon) Indie Birth Have questions? Any other topics you want us to chat on?
