How to Thrive this Holiday Season by Managing Expectations, Temptations, and Family Dynamics - Emma Solo (Ep.6)

from Successful Relationship with Emma · host Emma K Viglucci

Do you find the Holiday Season stressful and overwhelming, wonderful and magical, or all of the above? You are not alone in feeling ambivalent about the holidays. There is so much that takes place and that we experience in a short amount of time. And yes, I know—first-world problems. Nonetheless, this is part of our experience, and denying or minimizing it doesn’t serve us. The opposite is true. When we have awareness of how we are operating and feeling, we can have our own back, address what’s not serving us, and create the magic we seek. The holidays, just as anything else in our life, are what we make of them. Do we make them more challenging than they have to be? Do we create bondage around how we approach them? Do we trigger ourselves? Do we give our power away? Do we create misery? All of this can be avoided, and the opposite can be created. We can have a smooth end-of-year, magical holidays, and an exciting new year—but only if we are intentional and proactive about what we create. In today’s episode, I cover:Why the Holiday Season can feel stressful, overwhelming, wonderful, or magicalHow our expectations can affect our experience of the holidaysHow to become more aware of what is and isn’t serving usWays to manage and anticipate holiday challengesHow to get ahead of stress and emotional triggersHow family dynamics and holiday activities can impact usHow to be intentional and proactive about creating the holiday experience we wantHow to create a smoother, more enjoyable, joyful, and magical seasonYou’ll walk away with greater awareness of the things that can make the holidays challenging and practical ways to manage, anticipate, and get ahead of them—so you can have your own back and create more of the holiday experience you actually want.Understanding Your Holiday ExperienceThe Holiday Season can bring up many different experiences. For some, it can feel wonderful and magical. For others, it can feel stressful and overwhelming. And for many of us, it can be all of the above. There is so much that takes place in a short amount of time. Between activities, expectations, family, traditions, responsibilities, and the emotions that come with the season, it can be easy to feel pulled in many different directions.Instead of judging ourselves for how we experience the holidays, awareness gives us the opportunity to recognize what is actually happening and respond more intentionally.Managing ExpectationsOur expectations can have a significant impact on how we experience the holidays. We may have ideas about how things should go, how other people should behave, or how we are supposed to feel during the season. When reality doesn’t match those expectations, we can create unnecessary stress, disappointment, or frustration for ourselves. The holidays are what we make of them. Becoming aware of the expectations we are carrying allows us to decide what is actually serving us and what we may need to release or adjust.Anticipating Stress and TriggersThe holidays can bring us into situations that trigger us or bring up patterns we may already be familiar with. Family dynamics, traditions, social expectations, and the sheer amount of activity can all contribute to feeling overwhelmed.Rather than waiting until we are already stressed or reactive, we can anticipate the situations that may be challenging for us.Awareness allows us to get ahead of those challenges, have our own back, and make choices that support the experience we want to create.Managing Temptations and Coping PatternsThe holiday season can also make it easier to fall into patterns that don’t necessarily serve us. When we feel stressed, overwhelmed, or emotionally activated, we may look for ways to numb, avoid, or cope rather than addressing what is really happening. The goal isn’t to judge ourselves for these patterns. It’s to become aware of them so we can make more conscious choices. When we recognize what triggers us and how we tend to respond, we have more power to choose a different way of navigating the experience.Navigating Family DynamicsFamily can be one of the most meaningful parts of the holidays—and it can also be one of the more challenging aspects. Being around family can bring up old dynamics, expectations, emotions, and patterns. The key is to recognize that we have a role in how we participate in these dynamics. We can become more intentional about what we engage with, how we respond, and what we want to create.Rather than giving our power away to other people’s behavior or expectations, we can focus on what is within our control and have our own back.Creating the Holiday Experience You WantThe holidays don’t have to simply happen to us. We can be intentional and proactive about what we create. When we become aware of what is stressing us, what we are expecting, what triggers us, and what isn’t serving us, we can make different choices. This allows us to create more space for joy, connection, meaningful traditions, and the experiences we actually want to have.We can create a smoother end-of-year, magical holidays, and an exciting new year when we take responsibility for our experience and intentionally participate in creating it.Listen to the episode to explore how you can manage expectations, temptations, and family dynamics so you can have your own back and create a more enjoyable, joyful, and magical Holiday Season.Hope this information serves you and helps you get on the path to your Successful Relationship.MENTIONED INSIDE AND MOREEnd-of-Year & New-Year Planning (ENP) ProcessNumbing for coping with stress especially during the holidaysHolidays thoughts stressing you out?Having a letting go practice for lightness and joyUplevel your holidays with enriching traditionsWhat would you like to have more of in the New Year?Blast the winter blues with more loveAre you achieving your relationship goals?1-Pg Downloadables:Relationship Collaboration System Watch our related videos on our: Youtube channelRELATED VIDEOSPlan for a NEW BEGINNING and for a LIFETIME of LOVE | DEC Theme: PLANBeat the WINTER BLUES | When NOT Feeling Like YourselfPLAYLIST: Successful Relationship with Emma PodcastDISCLAIMER: This content is meant to support your Journey and not as a replacement for professional assistance.
