How Your Liver Heals Itself… Until It Doesn’t: Liver Disease For Nurses

from Healthy Skin Life · host Brooke Wallace

Why can the liver regenerate? Why does jaundice turn the skin and eyes yellow? And what happens when the liver’s amazing ability to repair itself reaches its limit? 👉 Visual Learner?  Watch the video https://youtu.be/Y5vAoE8ivck In this episode of The Super Nurse Podcast, we take a deep dive into one of the most powerful and misunderstood organs in the human body: the liver. Starting with the Greek myth of Prometheus, whose liver was eaten and regenerated every day, we explore the real science behind liver regeneration, liver function, bilirubin metabolism, jaundice, hepatitis, and alcohol-related liver damage. The liver is often called the body’s chemical factory because it performs more than 500 essential functions, including detoxification, metabolism, bile production, blood filtering, nutrient processing, and waste removal. One of its most remarkable abilities is regeneration. After surgery, injury, or a living donor transplant, the remaining liver cells can begin multiplying almost immediately. In many cases, the liver can regain its full mass within a few weeks to several months. But liver regeneration has limits. The liver can recover from certain injuries and even repair damage caused by toxins, including alcohol, if the harmful cause is removed early enough. However, regeneration is not invincible. When the liver faces long-term, repeated damage, such as chronic alcohol use, viral hepatitis, advanced cirrhosis, or extensive scarring, the repair process can fail. Once healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue, the liver may permanently lose function. In this episode, we also explain how bilirubin is made when old red blood cells break down, why bilirubin can build up in the blood, and how that buildup causes jaundice. You’ll learn the difference between unconjugated and conjugated bilirubin, why urine can become dark, why stool can become pale or clay-colored, and how doctors classify jaundice into three major types. Topics covered in this episode: Liver regeneration explained Limits of liver regeneration How fast the liver regrows after surgery Liver damage from alcohol and toxins Cirrhosis and liver scarring Bilirubin metabolism Conjugated vs unconjugated bilirubin Why jaundice turns the skin and eyes yellow Pre-hepatic, hepatic, and post-hepatic jaundice Dark urine and pale stool explained Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E Alcohol-induced liver injury Dubin-Johnson syndrome Liver anatomy and function AST and ALT liver enzymes Prometheus and the liver myth Whether you’re a nursing student, medical student, healthcare professional, or someone who loves learning how the body works, this episode breaks down complex liver physiology in a simple, visual, and unforgettable way.
