Sarah Nicholson from Dameron Harvesting discussed their recent harvest, which occurred in western Oklahoma, specifically in areas like Amarita, Waketa, and Medford. Although the initial job was to harvest 800 acres, this expanded to 1,600 acres due to favorable circumstances and availability of additional work. The harvest was complicated by excessive rainfall, with 15 to 20 inches falling on the crops, which led to significant delays and challenges such as muddy fields and rampant crabgrass. Despite this, the harvest was deemed successful, cutting wheat that yielded 47 bushels per acre following the heavy rains. Initially, the wheat could have potentially produced 55 to 60 bushels per acre. The unusual wet season resulted in harvesters working in Oklahoma much later than typical, with operations extending into July when they are usually concluded. The high rain levels proved to be both a hindrance and an advantage, as seen in the exceptional quality of dryland corn compared to irrigated corn.
