I CAN’T TRANSLATE MYSELF TO FIT YOUR PERCEPTION OF ME

Intimacy places two private worlds in contact and gives neither person direct access to the other. Everything travels through perception. Tone acquires meaning. Silence acquires meaning. Touch acquires meaning. Distance, affection, criticism, hesitation, facial expression, timing and memory all pass through an interpretive system shaped before the present relationship existed. Learning that system may radically deepen intimacy. A partner who understands how you receive meaning gains access to an extraordinary relational skill. They can communicate across difference rather than demanding that their way of expressing love, hurt, safety or truth function as the universal language. The danger enters when translation changes jobs. Healthy translation carries meaning across perceptual difference. Corrupted translation forces one person to remodel themselves until the other person’s interpretation feels comfortable. That distinction governs the entire discussion. You may need to learn the language of your partner’s perception. You may also reach a point where speaking that language asks you to falsify your own interior. Wisdom must know the difference. Refusal can protect integrity. Refusal can also protect ego. Translation can demonstrate love. Translation can also become self-abandonment. No single position gets automatic moral authority. The deeper relational skill requires something far more difficult. Learn how your partner sees. Communicate with awareness of that sight. Remain willing to revise your own perception. Refuse any demand that requires you to become the character somebody else has already decided you are. The relationship changes when both partners learn that discipline. When only one partner learns it, intimacy slowly turns into accommodation.
