I HAVE NO MOORING FOR YOUR WOUNDS TO LATCH ONTO

from Zo Williams: Voice of Reason · host KBLA 1580 Am

I HAVE NO MOORING FOR YOUR WOUNDS TO LATCH ONTO Perhaps one of love’s greatest tests arrives when your pain reaches for me and discovers that I will not become who your pain remembers. Human wounds rarely remain private. They enter relationships carrying expectations shaped by earlier experience. Abandonment may anticipate pursuit. Distrust may provoke interrogation. Fear may seek control. Shame may invite rescue. None of this means every wounded person behaves identically, nor that another person causes the wound. The deeper question concerns what happens between two people when an old expectation reaches outward and finds no cooperating response. Here lies the possibility of a different intimacy. I can care about your fear without obeying it. I can hear your accusation without manufacturing a defense merely because you expected one. Your distance can hurt without forcing me to chase you. Your anger can register in my body without becoming the author of my behavior. Compassion does not require psychological conscription.
