ICE Locked Up a Trafficking Victim. Her Abuser is Walking Free. ICE Calls T-Visa a "Loophole"

A Colombian mother who was trafficked to the US, repeatedly raped, forced into unpaid labor, and beaten was detained by ICE at a routine check-in and separated from her two children - one still breastfeeding. She was denied a breast pump. Her alleged trafficker is free. She had pending asylum and T-visa applications and was in the process of reporting her trafficker to federal authorities when ICE grabbed her. She has no criminal record. DHS called her “an illegal alien” and called the T-visa program “a loophole.” She is the first trafficking victim in the history of the Human Trafficking Legal Center to be detained by ICE. Since Trump rescinded protections for trafficking victims, at least 41 survivors have filed habeas corpus petitions challenging their detention. The trafficker is free.
