If the Body, Mind, and Intellect Are Not the Real “I”, Then Who am "I"? | உடலும் மனமும் அறிவும் ‘நான்’ அல்ல என்றால், உண்மையான ‘நான்’ யார்?

from Santhosam Podcast: Guiding Light of Spiritual Wisdom · host Santhosam

In the 12th Velvi discourse, Gurumahan discusses the four Purusharthas, elaborates on the first two aims of life, Dharma and Artha, in the light of the mahavakya “Tat Tvam Asi.”The scriptures speak of four aims of life: Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. In Tamil they are called Aram, Porul, Inbam, and Veedu. What is Aram? What is Dharma? Dharma means that which is true, unchanging, indestructible, eternal, and real. That alone is Dharma. If we give material things to others, we do not call it Dharma; we call it charity. Charity brings merit. But Dharma leads to liberation. That is why it is called Dharma.Dharma declares the truth “Tat Tvam Asi.” “Tat” means That, “Tvam” means you, and “Asi” means are. It means “You are That.” We must teach this truth.Children, who are you? You are expressions of the Divine. This is Dharma.Next comes Artha, it does not refer to material possessions. Artha asks: Who is “That”? Who are “you”? How can you become That?“That” means Brahman, and “you” means the individual. But who do we think we are now? If we cannot walk, we say, “I am disabled.” If we cannot speak, we say, “I am mute.” We identify ourselves with the body. Then we speak about the mind. We say, “My mind is not well,” or “I have a good mind,” or “He has a cruel nature.” Then we speak about knowledge. We say, “I am great. I am a researcher. I am a scientist. I am a saint. I am a sage. I am a wise person.”But none of these is the true “I.” The real “I” is the Atma. This “I” is not a sage, not a saint, not a philosopher, and not a prophet. It exists beyond all these identities. When you realize this truth, you go beyond the states of waking, dream, and deep sleep. The state that remains there is Brahman. That Brahman and the presence within you are not different. The unseen God who governs the entire Universe also lives within you and guides you. Therefore you must realize this truth and merge completely with that Divine reality.Send us Fan MailLet Wisdom Flourish!Let Peace Prevail! Let us protect Mother earth!Let us protect the Universe!
