Napjainkban egyre több tényező veszélyezteti a tömegtájékoztatás szabadságát és a médiaorgánumok gazdasági életképességét. Ezért a Parlament közös keretet fogadott el a médiaszolgáltatások szabályozására: a tömegtájékoztatás szabadságáról szóló uniós jogszabályt. Valódi mérföldkőről van szó: a javasolt rendelet az újságírók és a médiában dolgozók védelme mellett foglalkozik a médiatulajdon-viszonyok átláthatóságával, a sokszínű és független médiakörnyezet garantálása érdekében pedig előmozdítja a nemzetközi együttműködést.
