Alright, so your music artist was plans to take over the world, huh? Yeah, uh, that's why I'm here. Well, you've come to the right place. Let's go!
Welcome to the IM Northbound podcast. Oh, god. Your guide to dominating the new music industry. What is up, y'all?
How you doing? Welcome to this little side episode of IM Northbound. This isn't a normal episode. I just wanted to tell you about where I've been, and let you in on a massive announcement.
Let you in on? I'm gonna tell you about a massive announcement. Let you in on a little secret. It can't be both a secret and an announcement at the same time, can it?
Whatever. You pick which everyone makes you more excited because you should be. But first of all, let me just tell you where I've been this whole time, because I know I haven't released a podcast in like a million a month. So first of all, I intentionally didn't release an episode during the music industry blackout week, because I wanted to show my support for Black Lives Matter, and that was intentional.
Then the three weeks that followed it was not intentional. During that week that I didn't post, I decided to try to reformate my computer, because it was acting a bit slow. Blah, blah, blah. It turns out something was actually broken in it, and I couldn't after I formatted it to turn it back on.
It wouldn't work. And I got told the technician will be out in a few days in quite, and really, when they said that, they actually meant it will be three weeks, until your computer gets fixed. That's the real quote, right? So anyway, it was a crazy three weeks I was trying to operate with, you know, two bits of flint and a stick and a rock trying to operate like a caveman.
And yeah, unfortunately, I meant that my podcast set up couldn't work. I couldn't be recorded. In saying that on a side note, I haven't actually said this on my podcast yet. So I should tell you first and foremost, I've actually started, I got asked to be a part of a really cool project called the Daily Music Industry Podcast, and I contribute to that.
And they release awesome content over there all the time. So make sure you go and check that out if you want to hear more stuff from me. If you've been following my show for a while, some of it might be revision, because I'm kind of just like getting started over there and introducing people to my different type of thinking about the industry. But yeah, regardless, there's plenty of cool stuff there from other people.
You don't have to just go and listen to me. Go check out all the other cool people helping music artists too. But yeah, go check that out. So if I go a while again, you still probably have other stuff to listen to over there.
But yeah, so anyway, that's where I've been. I apologize for how long it's taken me to get back. But today's the first day I'm actually able to reset up my podcast and have a recording something. And yeah, so I have big episodes of I'm Northbound plans.
I'm going to get back to that probably next week. But I just want to record you this quick episode to let you know about something really, really exciting. Okay, this is really, really big news. And I came as the result of me having a lot of time.
I mean, this is the thing, just because I took three weeks off the podcast and had no computer. It doesn't mean I wasn't working because I was working double hard to make up for the fact that I didn't have my usual system set up. But it did give me a bit of time to reflect upon when you know when you break the cycle and you find a new way of thinking. Well, that's what I did.
And that's what I found. And yeah, I mean, I started to think a lot about the 40-songwriter. And I receive ridiculous. Like daily, my inbox is like, it's just daily I receive countless amounts of emails from music artists, letting me know how much they enjoyed the book.
And I don't say that to brag. I say because it's the most incredible thing ever for me. Like considering the fact that two years ago, or maybe a bit longer now, because time goes faster than I think it does, I was talking myself out of writing a book. So, you know, I just, why would anyone want to read what I have to write?
I would tell myself, some reason I talk myself out of doing a podcast because you just think, you know, why would anyone want to listen to me ramble for half an hour about topics? But, you know, that's why I said people just do it because you will find that people do care and you should continue to do that. Right? So I was so wrong about doing that.
And I'm so glad to be so wrong about the book. And once I started writing it that it was good, I had hoped that people had read it. But I didn't know if people would. And yeah, to know how much it's changed, not just being read, but has changed the lives of so many of you guys is the craziest thing ever.
But it's also made me feel a little bit, I would say unsettled, but more so just, I don't know, it just hasn't sat right with me. The 40 songwriter that is. It's because I know personally that I'm capable of better things. I know I'm capable of writing a better book.
And I've come up with so much better content of late, so much, so much stuff, like to the point where I even considered writing a new book. But then I thought to myself, you know, writing a new book might take another couple of years for it to come out. Like I have to really find the vision and the direction and really it's just a sequel to the 40 songwriter. Should I write a sequel to the 40 songwriter or something like that?
And then I thought about it, I'm like, okay, so when I leave this earth, eventually, and what I leave behind, would I be 100% proud of the 40 songwriter? Regardless of how much people like it now, would I be happy with that? And my answer was no, because I know I'm capable of better things now. Now that the book has come out, I feel like I've had more chance to apply, like way more music, how to apply the techniques and tactics.
I've spoken to hundreds of you guys on the calls at the end of the book where I say, jump on a call. I'm talking to you guys all the time and finding out about what you liked about the book, what you didn't, like, what didn't come through clearly enough. So I can make that even clearer and how you're actually applying it and the roadblocks you're seeing. And I just know so much now about how the application of it all that I want to reassess what is in the book, because I feel like I can help way more people.
So anyway, cut to the chase, there's no point in talking about it too much longer. It's the fact that we're in July now as of the time of recording this and as of the time it will be uploaded, which means that the 40 songwriter has officially been out for a year. It's birthday and I thought to celebrate its birthday, I want to announce that hopefully by the end of this year, I hope to have it done sooner, but with how time works, it probably will be more like the end of this year. I'm going to be launching a revised version of the 40 songwriter that's going to be completely different.
Okay, so I feel like I'm going to talk a little bit about what it's going to be. So if you have read the book before, first of all, I say you don't have to pay for the new version. I'm not going to try to sell you on the same book, even though it's going to be radically different or significantly different. I'll say significantly because it's going to be quite different from the first book you've read, but you still supported me in the early days.
I want to support you back so you don't have to pay for it. Okay, that's first of all, I'm going to get that out of the way. So I don't think the rest of this is a sales pitch to get you to want to buy the book. But, you know, I'm here to help and not try to make money off you as you already know.
But what I want to do with the 40 songwriter when I reassess the book is really lean into the main core premise of the book, which is that authenticity leads to connection and connection leads to true fans. And the fact that music artists are capable of potentially changing lives or potentially saving them with their music. If they lean into why they write music and I really want to double down on that message, I've created marketing strategies on how to do that. I've found cooler things, easier ways.
I've got so much more content. So I just talked about it all day, but I think I'm going to be adding about 30% more content to the book at least. So hopefully, I mean, if I can get up to like half a new content, that'd be amazing, but it might sit between 30 and 40%. But if I can do that, it's just going to be that it'll pretty much read like a new book to you.
Some stuff will be revision. If you've read the book before, it's going to be the best thing I can possibly offer you so that when I finish it, I can feel comfortable knowing that I'm leaving that book behind in my legacy. When I first started writing the book, I kind of knew the direction that I wanted to take it. I had that same core message, but it's the individual topics of the book.
Some of them seemed a little bit disjointed and not really on brand for the rest of all, I'll say on message for the rest of the books. So I'll be removing some of those chapters out and writing completely new chapters about different things. I want to dive way more into the lifestyle to mention and give more applicable ways to implement that. I'm going to talk more about psychology in the book, behind how to move listeners, and I'm going to make it so that it doesn't age with time.
Like right now in my office, I'm looking at my bookshelf and on the bottom shelf, it's full of music industry books that I picked up and read to see what other people are saying when I was doing research for my book just to see if there was even a point in writing my book in the first place because of people already saying what I was going to say, then I wouldn't have written, I'd take the time to write it, right? But a lot of those books are all just completely obsolete already. I know I've only written a few years ago. One in particular was written in 2014, so that's six years ago.
But there's nothing in that book that could be applied these days. The one thing I got out of it was in the final section where he was just rambling off theoretical ideas and it was because I came to the conclusion myself after thinking about how it could be applied to the new industry. It wasn't even literally a pliable, literally a applicable story to the industry now. It's like it requires some work and some jiming, right?
To get it to actually fit in today's industry. And I don't want that. It's really hard to write about an industry that shifts so much, but yeah, I'm going to make it way more long-term. So it becomes an overall marketing strategy from start to finish that you can apply now five years time, 10 years time, hopefully even in 50 years time.
That is all built on authenticity and doesn't talk specifically about whatever's trendy at the moment with social media platforms, et cetera, because that can all change overnight as we all know already. But yes, on that note, which is my last point because I don't want to talk about this too long, I'm going to be giving you an entire marketing strategy from start to finish. So my goal is that when you read the 40-songwriter, it's not just a collection of thoughts and ideas that you can use to help shape your journey. And guidance, it's also going to be, all right, here is this question you need to answer every time you release anything.
Here's the strategy, here's the framework from start to finish. Here's how you go from being a music artist with no direction to having all the direction and you can return back to chapters, follow the formulas and create content that really moves people and stands the best chance to make a real difference in their lives. Also diving way deeper into not just the fact that you should tell your story, but how to actually like the function of correctly running out your story, the ways that it should be written. Also, when I talk about finding your motivation, I'm going to actually be giving you examples on how to do that, how to actually find your motivation and then how to refine it, rather than just telling you to refine it.
I'm going to give you questions and steps and processes and everything like that. Yeah, because I mean, I don't know if you, I said a few episodes a while back that I was considering working with Music Arts one-on-one. We're now second month now and I'm working with a ton of you guys and we're seeing some crazy results and I'm helping you grow your audience. But it's along those journeys that I'm hearing just the chapters that I want to add to this book.
So there you go. That's the exciting news I have for you today, just a quick little time in episodes also today. You know, as I said, it's roughly about the one year anniversary or birthday of the 40 Songwriter coming out. I'll say it that way.
It's the 40 Songwriter's birthday and what better way to celebrate than making it even better. So expect a pretty much a sequel to the 40 Songwriter. Oh yeah, I should tell you the new book will have a change of title. It will still be called the 40 Songwriter because at its core, it's the same book, but it's going to be called the 40 Songwriter more than a music artist.
And I feel like that title represents the core theme of the book better that I'll be moving toward. On a personal level, I like the title, how to dominate the music industry because I feel like that was applicable to the old book. But yeah, after some reflection, I feel like that kind of insinuates that we're chasing some kind of fame, even though the book is anti-fame. So, you know, I mean, the people who have read the book know that's not the intention of the title, but I just want to make it super clear.
So someone discovering it for the first time knows exactly what it's about and what they're getting themselves into. Anyway, thank you so much for listening to this episode. Thank you so much for being a part of it. If this is the first episode you've heard, please make sure to go back and listen to my other ones.
This is not a typical episode of I'm Northbound. I'm just telling you about something like wherever I've been and what an exciting announcement I have. And that way I can help more music artists change lives with their music, too.
