In the Beginning: The Tribal Allotments & The Light of the World (Day 119)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

Who is Jesus, and where did He come from? Today, we begin the Gospel of John, arguably one of the most profound books ever written. John doesn't start with a manger or a genealogy; he starts in eternity past, revealing Jesus as the "Logos"—the Word who was with God and is God. In the Old Testament, we continue the detailed work of Joshua as the land is divided among the tribes, specifically focusing on the massive territory of Judah. Even in the technical details of borders and cities, we see God fulfilling the specific promises He made centuries earlier.Today’s Scripture:📖 Joshua 15–16 – We see the extensive allotment given to the tribe of Judah, the tribe through which the Messiah would eventually come. This section includes Caleb’s conquest of Hebron and Debir, followed by the borders for the sons of Joseph (Ephraim). We see a recurring and sobering note: the failure to fully drive out the inhabitants of the land.📖 John 1:1–28 – The "Prologue" of John’s Gospel. John introduces the Word who is the source of life and light. We meet John the Baptist, the voice crying out in the wilderness, who makes it clear that he is not the Christ, but the one sent to prepare His way.📖 Psalm 53:1–6 – A chilling echo of Psalm 14, describing the "fool" who says in his heart there is no God. It is a call for salvation to come out of Zion and for God to restore His people.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG 📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF 📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/ 🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT 📧 Questions?
