IN THE SPOTLIGHT: PROF SHIRLEY WALTERS

CURRENTLY CO-DIRECTOR OF THE TRADITIONS OF POPULAR EDUCATION PROJECT, FUNDED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HOUSED IN IPSS AT UWC.- She was founding director of UWC’s Division for Lifelong Learning, retiring in 2014 when she was appointed Professor Emerita- Shirley Walters is the 2016 joint recipient of an Honorary Fellowship - one of seven globally - from the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in Germany, for outstanding contributions to lifelong learning praxis.- She is a feminist and has been active within social justice oriented civil society organisations for over 35 years both locally and globally- She is the African representative on the global civil society organisation, International Council for Adult Education (ICAE).- Professor Shirley Walters and Professor Astrid von Kotze were presented in March 2016 with an inaugural award for innovative scholarship by the NIHSS, and they are currently co-editing a book to be published by SENSE Publishers (Netherlands) on Forging solidarity: Popular Education at Work (forthcoming 2017).
