Often to determine if something is right or good or God’s will, we use pain, suffering, and sacrifice for a measuring stick. While I do not disagree that sometimes virtuous acts can be difficult and inconvenient, I think we are missing the mark when we use “pain and suffering” as a way to determine if something is right or wrong. It’s like we have this mental checklist. Is it inconvenient? Check. Is it the opposite of what I want? Check. Is it going to require sacrifice? Check. Is it going to cause suffering? Check. Is it going to be hard? Check. Conclusion: This must be good, right, and God’s will. But this is a flawed and limited way to discern to discern what is good and right. In this interview, Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife talks about this indulgent suffering that as Christians we sometimes value, and discuss the moral development required to act instead with virtue and integrity.
