Inês Lourenço nasceu em casa, na freguesia portuense de Santo Ildefonso, Porto, em 1942. Licenciada em Línguas e Literaturas Modernas pela Universidade do Porto, curso que só terminou depois de casar e de ter sido mãe, referiu em entrevistas anteriores que gosta de escrever desde criança – já na escola primária se destacava quando se recitavam poemas ou faziam composições –, mas que não tinha necessariamente o sonho de ser escritora. Tinha, sim, e são estas palavras suas, uma coisa “quase biológica”, uma necessidade de escrever que se mantém até hoje. Numa entrevista realizada há poucos anos contou-me que se não escrever se sente mal porque a sua emocionalidade precisa de escape. Na infância, começou por decorar poemas, por exemplo de Antero de Quental ou de Bocage (era prática comum do ensino de português incentivar as crianças a decorar poesia), para depois arriscar escrever numa máquina Underwood oferecida pelo pai. Já na adolescência escreveu para jornais estudantis, mas só publicou o primeiro livro aos 35 anos. Entre poesia e microficções, é autora de quase 20 títulos. Foi responsável pela revista Hífen, uma publicação na qual colaboraram nomes incontornáveis da poesia portuguesa do Século XX.  Ao longo das suas 13 edições, a revista Hífen publicou cerca de 160 poetas. Acredita que “a poesia tem de sabotar o lugar comum”.
