Between 2.5% and 6.7% of Men and Women Suffer from a chronic bladder condition called Interstitial Cystitis. If they are suffering from this they experience some or all of these symptoms urinary frequency, urinary urgency, painful urination or burning during or after urination, sometimes when bladder fills having pain, nerve pain, urethral pain, lower abdominal pain and bloating, pelvic pain, vulvodynia, and pain during sex.  In this episode I welcome on an expert in Interstitial Cystitis and Urinary Tract Infections; Dr. Deanna Berman. In this episode we cover:  Chronic Interstitial cystitis as a heterogeneous disorder. Chronic antibiotic use is connected to Interstitial Cystitis. Most Interstitial Cystitis cases will have no pathology on imaging (cystoscopy) The bladder microbiome is linked to the functionality A healthy bladder has protection (mucin layer) and a healthy bladder microbiome. Your bladder is a tank for detoxification so it needs to be hardy and also resilient to the environment. Chronic antibiotics use can embed an infection in the bladder! Chronic Infections and Exposures can imbed Mold toxicity, Lyme Disease Histamine-rich foods often are a trigger and must be explored. NextGen Sequencing such as the MicroGenDx test can look at the microbiome of the vaginal and bladder microbiome to navigate Biofilm formation in the bladder may be the root cause  of interstitial cystitis Dr. Berman addresses Chronic IC with a 5-part strategy.It is treatable. UTI testing are often inappropriately negative in patients who have an underpopulated urinary microbiome! This leads to a conclusion that IC is non-infectious. The wrong Probiotics strains are often given to the vaginal and urinary microbiome.
