Standing Down to Lift Our Heroes Up In the quiet corners of our cities, a silent battle is being waged. It is not fought with artillery or in distant lands, but in the hearts and lives of the men and women who once wore the uniform of our nation. Today, many veterans in North Florida find themselves "at risk," facing the daunting challenges of homelessness, health crises, and the struggle to reintegrate into the community they once protected. Doug Apple sat down with Althamese Smith, the coordinator for the 2026 North Florida Homeless and At-Risk Veterans Stand Down. The event, organized by the Tallahassee Veteran Organization, is a powerful reminder of the biblical mandate to care for those in need. Scheduled for May 15 and 16 at the Al Lawson Center on the campus of FAMU, this Stand Down serves as a sanctuary where resources and restoration meet. The event focuses on the whole person, offering everything from counseling and housing assistance to the simple dignity of a haircut or a warm meal. By providing these services free of charge, the organization seeks to honor the "very element" of who these individuals are, recognizing their sacrifice and giving back to them in their time of need. The logistics are designed to remove every barrier. Through a partnership with Star Metro, free transportation is available to ensure that no veteran is left behind due to a lack of transportation. Pre-registration is encouraged via the Tallahassee Veteran Organization website, though all veterans are welcome to walk in and receive the support they deserve. As we look toward May 15-16, 2026, let us remember that "standing down" for a veteran actually means standing up for the values of compassion and service.
