Interview with Fabiano Niyonkuru - 1706

The war in Central Africa in 1984 left young Fabiano and his family homeless. Thousands fled with what they could carry. It involved crossing Lake Tanganyika to the Congo, lying on banana palms to float across. Many drowned. The family was accepted into a UN refugee camp to re-settle. Fires burned nightly to ward off lions/animals stealing unprotected people. There was war within the camp that meant more migrating on foot. Crossing the lake again till they reached Tanzania. Dad was Catholic. In Africa, the family must follow dad’s religion. Over the next ten years the family earned a living through dad’s successful trading. Dad was murdered by jealous refugees. What happens next is nothing short of a miracle. Mum remarried. Their stepdad, an Adventist means the family becomes Adventist. Scroll forward a few years and Fabiano experiences another kind of war. Safely migrated to a Western country, this time the war is within him, a turning away from his faith. Then an amazing story of courage, fortitude and the protection of God unfolded.
