The Southern African Females in Energy Efficiency (SAFEE) has ventured into mentorship programs at tertiary institutions promoting educational interest in the energy sector as a career option. This is in an effort to empower women and alleviate poverty.In an interview on Morning Live, SAFEE Chairperson Noxolo Kahlana says there are more opportunities for women in the energy sector."There are many more opportunities for women in this sector especially the renewable sector because it is new in the country and the department that is driving it, the Department of Energy is very intentional about making sure that women are involved. Just last year together with women in oil the Department of Energy went on a road show to present to women things that are happening in the energy sector and energy as whole and these are the specific opportunities available for women because every independent power producer is expected to some preferential procurement opportunities for women."Third year chemical engineering student Edinah Joy January says the mentorship programme is very beneficial to students."The breakfast mentorship programme was quite amazing, very empowering. I got in touch with very phenomenal women and what I learned from it is the fact that there are a lot of opportunities in the energy sector, it has encouraged me to consider a career opportunity in the energy sector more specifically to go and do environmental engineering."
