Into Thin Air: Everest, Frostbite & the World’s Worst Group Project

This week, we’re heading straight into the death zone to talk about the 1996 Everest disaster, the tragedy that inspired the book Into Thin Air and permanently changed the way people view climbing Mount Everest. From altitude sickness and hypoxia to avalanches, frozen toes, and people making absolutely unhinged decisions at 29,000 feet, we break down what happened on the mountain and why this story still haunts people 30 years later. We also dive into the differences between the Everest movie and Jon Krakauer’s book, the physical toll of climbing at extreme altitude, why the “death zone” is exactly as terrifying as it sounds, and the truly insane reality of climbing Everest in the first place. Plus: Jessie explains why she could never climb Everest after literally falling into a bomb crater in France, Kiki spirals about frozen body parts, and somehow, we end up discussing toe rings, diarrhea at base camp, and whether avalanche survival swimming is real. Also included in this episode: Everest-themed “This or That” chaos “Mountain or Metal Band” game Frostbite vs snow blindness debates Stories from Into Thin Air that emotionally wrecked us Why hypothermia basically turns your brain into soup Basically, if you’ve ever looked at Mount Everest and thought, “absolutely not,” this episode is for you.
