There is however an expansion on that quote that is not so well-known. Which is, "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." And this version has the reverse inference, being that any deep, mutually bonding agreement - or friendship - can often be much more important than some relationships with your family members. It took a while before Keith and Lee got around to discussing this as, which is often the case, they were distracted commenting on a few other matters.
