Is it time for more CCTV in Ramsbottom? – Episode 94

from This is Rammy

I was just putting together the show for this week when I came across some news that really saddened me. The newest shop in Ramsbottom, Bang and Olufsen had been broken into. Not only did the thieves break into it once, they broke into it TWICE. Bang and Olufsen has only been opened since the 1st of June this year and in just five and a half weeks to be broken into twice could be massively demotivating. I spoke to Karön of Bang and Olufsen Ramsbottom to find out exactly what happened and how it’s been in the days since the break-in. Karön was great and despite what’s happened was very upbeat and positive about the town. This raises the question though, why is there not more CCTV in Ramsbottom especially given the steady increase in crime around the town? Is it high time for more CCTV in Ramsbottom? The Ramsbottom Business Group have been asking for this for some time, and I know that Sara D’Arcy the chairperson of Ramsbottom Business Group has been pushing this personally herself. There IS CCTV around Ramsbottom as this past article from 2012 mentions on Bury Times: CCTV snares man damaging nine vehicles it would however suggest that there is not enough. Especially given Baratxuri is just around the corner from Bang and Olufsen, and it too suffered from vandalism a year back, starting with that area of the town would be worthwhile. What do you think though? Does Ramsbottom need more CCTV? Let’s not forget though that Ramsbottom is still pretty low on the crime ratings. Looking at the crime stats for April 2017 you can see that for the postcode around Bang and Olufsen (actually Baratxuri) you can see there were 69 reported crimes for that month: to compare this to me personally as to where I used to live in Salford: Granted the population of these two postcodes is different, about double for Salford, but 69 crimes vs 516 is still low. I know I’m not comparing apples to apples here, and actually if you take a look at the crime counts over the years for Ramsbottom, it’s been going back and forth hitting a peak back in January 2012 where 155 crimes were reported. Here’s a spreadsheet of that data. There does seem to be an increase however, especially in the last few years. Potentially coincidental but Ramsbottom Police Station has been closed since 2015 where we see this increase:   Ramsbottom United News: The fixtures for the league have been posted now and the first match for Ramsbottom United is a home match on Saturday the 12th of August against Tadcaster Albion who finished 19th last season (Ramsbottom United finished 14th last season). Tadcaster will be hoping to get a win in front of new managers Michael Morton & Simon Collins but I’m sure the Rams new players will also want to put on a good show.
