One of the reasons This is Rammy podcast exists is to have converstaions with people who improve Ramsbottom. This episode is no exception with me speaking with Lynn and Pete of the Ramsbottom Countryside Access Volunteers. You might not be aware of the group, but you might very well have been benefiting from the work that they’ve done around our town. On the 9th of February 2020, storm Ciara hit Britain bringing gale force winds and several inches of rain causing the River Irwell to burst its banks. back of Kenyon Street – Photo taken by Pete Fillery Nuttall Park and other areas closest to the River Irwell when it burst its banks were worst hit. This flooded people out of their homes for the second time since 2015. Nuttall Park Play Area Nuttall Park Base Flooded As it currently stands, unless something changes, this is going to happen every few years that we get a big storm hitting us. Gu of Tea Atelier has been running the shop for two years this February, so I found out how he went from a tea documentary to running his own Tea Shop. If you’re unfamiliar, Tea Atelier used to be the old TV Repair shop in Bridge Street, as it had been for many many years. Prior to Tea Atelier, the premises had been a TV repair shop for a number of years Gu and his wife Michelle took on the task of renovating the shop and turning into what is now Tea Atelier. They had never done anything like this before, they’d renovated their own house, but that’s about it. I think they’ve done a fantastic job turning what was once an electronics and repair shop, into a cafe/tea shop. This all happened as a result of having a family walk. I first spoke to Rowan three years ago, almost to the day, on episode 84 for Ramsbottom Running Club shortly after it was formed. At the time, there were 60 members of the Running Club, and now, it’s getting towards 400 members which is phenomenal, if you’re interested in getting involved in the Ramsbottom Running Club, which is an inclusive club, there’s even a walk and talk route now, then check out the Ramsbottom Running Club website. This time I interviewed Rowan to find out more about the epic challenge he will be taking on this May. Rowan is running 20 Marathons, in 20 UK Cities, in 20 consecutive days…. just let that sink in a little. He is putting himself through this in an effort to raise £20k for homelessness with The Running Charity. This is possibly, one of the most commonly asked questions I see, and commonly corrected too (usually pretty quickly and, let’s say passionately). It’s a simple question, and you’d think would has a simple answer. I’m hoping that this episode of the podcast will serve as a reference for future generations, but most people will probably continue to argue online about it (sorry, discuss passionately). This question comes up often enough for local poet Paul Jenkins to have created TWO poetry books. To give you an example of how often this comes up, it has actually spawned two poetry books from local poet Paul Jenkins, namely Poems from VillageTown Volumes 1 and 2. Is Ramsbottom a town or a Village? Let me start by explaining that I honestly thought a quick “Google” of this question would provide me with some background. I know what Ramsbottom is, but I wanted to try my best to explain WHY it is what it is. Not just say, it’s this, because it is. One thing that does come up is people will say “Ramsbottom has always been a town” which I understood to be the case, but the massively helpful people at the Ramsbottom Heritage Society, in particular Keith Burrows pulled out this nugget for me, it would appear, that Ramsbottom went through a bit of a transformation in the mid to late 1800’s: 1850 Heap’s DirectoryTottington-Lower-End.Comprising the villages of Tottington, Ramsbottom, Nuttall, Holcombe, Etc.1871 Worrall’s DirectoryRamsbottom, Tottington—Higher End, Tottington— Lower End, Holcombe, Edenfleld, Shuttleworth, Summerseat and Neighbourhoods.RAMSBOTTOM is a large manufacturing village (or town), situated mostly in the town­ ship of Tottington, lower end, parish of Bury, hundred of Salford, diocese of Manchester, and in the electoral division of South-East Lancashire1880 Barrett’s DirectoryRAMSBOTTOM is a manufacturing town, situated mostly in the township of Tottington Lower End, parish of Bury, Hundred of Salford, diocese of Manchester, and in the electoral division of South East Lancashire. One of the first sources I came across was a website called Gorgeous Cottages which outlined that a town is: To be classed as a town, the location must have multiple places of worship as well as central meeting points. Traditionally in England and Wales a town was a settlement with a charter to hold a market or fair.https://www.gorgeouscottages.com/blog/a-hamlet-a-village-a-town-or-a-city I’ve trawled through a few other websites to find some references too, here we go: A town is a human settlement. Towns are generally larger than villages but smaller than cities, though the criteria to distinguish them vary considerably between different parts of the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town#United_Kingdom Wikipedia does also refer to towns as being: …the term town is employed either for old market towns, or for settlements which have a town council, or for settlements which elsewhere would be classed a city, but which do not have the legal right to call themselves such. Any parish council can decide to describe itself as a town council, but this will usually only apply to the smallest “towns” (because larger towns will be larger than a single civil parish). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town#United_Kingdom Whilst researching and collecting various sources (I hear this is what you do when you’re trying to prove a point, collect evidence, give a bibliography, something else clever and wordy) I came across the City & Town Classification of Constituencies & Local Authorities published in 2018. The House of Commons Library has developed a new classification of constituency and local authority areas according to the size of the settlements people live in… Each constituency and local authority is assigned to one of six categories, e.g. “Core City” or “Small Town”, which most closely matches its population distribution. This is intended to offer an alternative to rural/urban classifications in analysing variation. https://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/CBP-8322 Ramsbottom, as it stands now is a Small Town. This is based on the classifications outlined in the above publication from 2018, this is also referenced on the Centre for Towns website. The Centre for Towns website outlines the criteria to classify towns from 2018 In addition to the chart, the Centre for Towns website provides a spreadsheet you can download, this shows you that Ramsbottom, in the 2011 census has a population of 20,713 which isn’t a million miles off from being classed as a medium town. The press release on the 29th of November looked like good news, a title of “We’re improving Irwell Line from 26 January” however it soon became clear this was anything but for Ramsbottom. Within this came the announced death of the Red Express/x41 service due to happen at the end of January. To get a better understanding about why these changes were happening and if there was anything that could make Transdev reconsider, I contacted Alex Hornby, CEO of Transdev Blazefield for an interview and Alex was more than happy to come on the podcast. One key area of discussion was the cost of the service. The article mentioned above details Transdev are losing £300,000 a year running the Red Express and Alex was keen to highlight this didn’t come lightly: “We’re not a public body, we can’t share our secrets with everyone. We wouldn’t be withdrawing the service if it did work, it’s not in our interest to do that.” – Alex Hornby Many people in Ramsbottom rely on this bus service not only for commuting but for leisure activities to and from Manchester City Centre. In addition, this service brings in people from outside the town, allowing them to sample our ample nightlife and restaurants. Ramsbottom residents are fully aware of this, which is why this petition was created: Save the X41 Bus Service Petition I speak about this in the interview with Alex to try to understand if the backing of this would make any difference on their decision. Parent company Transdev have three company values on their website, these are: “Fighting against global warming, committing to regional development, mobilizing employees. This interview surprised me in several parts. I had no idea that Matt was in to so many things, he doesn’t just own and run Roots, which you’ll hear in the interview. Originally starting out from his own home (Matt has a very understanding wife 😄) they then moved to their own premises I’ve been to Roots a few times now and if you’ve never been I’d argue it’s certainly somewhere to try. It’s a set menu and if you don’t like anything or if you’re allergic to anything you can mention before you go and they’ll accommodate you. Personally, I eat lots of different things, and what I don’t like I’m always up for trying it done properly, or in a different way. As Matt says in the episode, lots of people have commented that they’ve been surprised by things they didn’t think they liked. Matt is also only the second person ever to take on the new section “Quickfire Questions from Kids”. As well as Roots Food and Drink, there is also the Ready Meal service so you don’t have to miss out if they are fully booked. Not only is it great food (Matt even brought me some to try before the interview) but they are delivered in reusable glass trays which you pay just a £10 deposit for. The ready meals are cooked Sunday and Wednesday and delivered the evenings of. Sam has a bright future planned for The Major Sam Gibbs and her husband Christian took over The Major in Ramsbottom on the 4th of November and before that happened Sam got in touch and I said I’d love to have her on the show. Not only is The Major a popular local pub, it’s one of the first pubs I ever went to in Ramsbottom and I know lots of the regulars are keen to see what they have planned. Craft beers, pub food and dog treats Sam has had a manic first week, she told me she thinks they’ve only had about 25 hours sleep since they took on The Major. In our chat I found that they are planning on taking it more back to how it used to be at The Major, namely some craft beers and pub food. In addition, dogs are more than welcome, not only that but there are some free treats for dogs too. I know this will sit well with many local canine owners. They are aiming to have the kitchen open and serving food as early as this coming weekend and looking at getting some more craft beers on the pumps. I really enjoyed my chat with Sam, and I got a great feeling about the future of The Major, so far she’s ticked many of my own personal boxes. Ramsbottom Young People’s Community Choir launches Having launched just last week, the Ramsbottom Young People’s Community Choir is fresh and looking for children to come and have a go. I talk to Karen Lindop on the podcast this week and she tells me that the Ramsbottom Young People’s Community Choir was created when one of the children basically asked Karen to put it together as she was not old enough to join the adult choir. Karen tells me that the hope is that the children will be able to join in the performance near Christmas and as such, the sooner you join the quicker you’ll be able to learn the songs. The choir is for children aged from 7 to 13 and it takes place at St Andrews Church on Tuesday nights during term time from 5:15pm until 6:15pm, you can drop your child off, go have a coffee/wine or even a shop and come back an hour later. Christmas is cancelled! Well, not quite, but no doubt you’ve heard that we’re not having a Christmas Market this year? Every year thousands of people flock to Ramsbottom for our variety of festivals and events and two of the biggest on the calendar are our Chocolate Festival and the Christmas Markets. Both of these events are organised by Ramsbottom Markets The news broke of this and one of the popular Ramsbottom Facebook Groups was quickly on the scene and has at the time of recording amassed over 160 comments. Terri Fletcher has been doing her best to answer the vast majority of questions there, should you want to see the response you can see the post here: What’s on in Ramsbottom Bonfire night shenanigans This year, I didn’t go to the Ramsbottom Cricket Club bonfire night… I know, I know, but I did however go to the Greenmount Scouts Bonfire Night for the first time and, well it was fantastic! The bonfire and fireworks were great, maybe the fireworks weren’t quite as spectacular as Ramsbottom Cricket Clubs, but what won me over was the old school games. There were an amazing 22 stalls doing everything from hook a duck to splat the rat to tombola. This month saw the Hungry Duck receive a Michelin Plate Award but what exactly IS a Michelin Plate award? Now, I’m sure you’ll have heard of the much coveted Michelin Star (which Manchester has received for the first time in 40 years). Before I get to the Plate though, did you know, according to Lookers, Michelin stars originated when the Michelin brothers in France, in order to encourage drivers to travel further, and by thus wearing down more tyres, rated restaurants that people should go out of their way for. Cunning. The Michelin Plate is the symbol for those restaurants that have neither a star nor a Bib Gourmand. For restaurants, being in the selection is the sign of very good food, and the Michelin Plate is the symbol for that. The Plate is the third award that Michelin have on offer in addition to the star and the Bib Gourmand. Speaking of the Bib Gourmand, The Hearth of the Ram actually received this award in 2016, and as for the Plate award, not only does The Hungry Duck have one, but Levanter does too. I believe Levanter received theirs in 2018. Michelin Recognised Ramsbottom Restaurants The Eagle and Child receives Taste Gold Accolade In addition to the Michelin news, Glen Duckett’s multi-award winning Eagle and Child also received a Visit England Taste Gold Accolade. The Taste Gold Accolade is part of Visit England’s Taste Scheme. This is open to any any business offering food, including catering within other businesses, such as a cafe in a hotel or visitor attraction. The scheme assesses against statutory requirements, the physical dining experience, staff and food and drink. There are two levels of accreditation: Taste Accolade, for those passing the criteria with a score of 60-79%, andTaste Gold Accolade, for those achieving a high pass of 80%+. Eagle and Child Facebook RammyMen bring home the bacon with Community or Group of the Year Award Do you want some more awards? In almost breaking news, on Friday the 18th of October the fantastic RammyMen attended the Bury Sports Awards, who not only received a nomination for the Initiative of the Year Award, they actually won the Community Club or Group of the Year Award. RammyMen on Facebook And last but not least, Plentiful, the Plastic Free shop in Ramsbottom is up-scaling their operation. I popped in last week and spoke to Abbie after I noticed their post. The shop they’re taking on is the old Bride Sew Beautiful shop on Bridge Street. You might also remember it as being the old Bluegum Gifts shop. As part of this move, and to help fund it Abbie is running a Crowd Funder campaign, you can find out more details here: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/plentiful I’m hoping to get Abbie on the podcast soon to explain how this all came about. 9:04 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ Moving on to Ramsbottom United news, the last match we played was the FA TROPHY match at home against Colne on Saturday 12th October 2019. This was also non-league day Unfortunately, Colne proved to be just too strong for us and despite and early goal for Rammy, we lost 3-1. The next match for Ramsbottom is away to Clitheroe in the League on Saturday 26th October 2019 KO 15:00 We are currently 9th in the table having played 8 matches with 16 points. There are a few teams around us in the league who we have a game or two, in some instances four, in hand against so that 9th position could prove a little deceptive. Emma Davies is someone who after noticing just how many books her children had collected over time realised she’d rather do something a bit different with them than just take them to the charity shop. Plastic, it’s all around us and I’m sure you’ve come across the many headlines in the news about how the planet is choking on the deluge which is being produced and consumed every day. Not only that but Ramsbottom is home to one of the few Plastic Free shops in the North West, Plentiful. Plastic Free Ramsbottom decided enough was enough and set out to gain our town of Ramsbottom the status of becoming a Plastic Free Community This week I speak to Laura Chepner, Sharon Hanley-Hewitt and Pete Fillery who are all members of Plastic Free Ramsbottom on what they’ve been doing to get Ramsbottom the Plastic Free Community status with Surfers Against Sewage. At the time of the interview Ramsbottom had not yet acheived the status of becoming a Plastic Free Community however within a week of recording the interview, it was acheived! Hurray! With that said, they would LOVE for more groups and businesses to get involved, the work doesn’t stop just because we’ve been rubber stamped by Surfers Against Sewage as a Plastic Free Community, arguably it’s only just started. Another week has flown by like a stocking full of black pudding….speaking of which, did you find any time to visit the black pudding throwing competition this weekend? I wasn’t able to go, we had a full weekend of birthday parties and it was also my daughters 2nd birthday and I’m afraid that wins always. Cracking on with the show, there’s certainly been a theme running through the past week, not only was it my daughters birthday but there have been three other local businesses celebrating these milestones too. Firstly Plentiful: Plastic Free Shop ran by the wonderful Abbie Sellers opened one year ago on August the 31st. Well done Abbie, keep up the great work you’re doing, one year in any business is hard, one year in a very niche business like yours is incredible. Originally named Fulfilled but due to some trademark related issue the shop had to be renamed to Plentiful. Another one year birthday (birthday/anniversary?) was Holcombe Tap. Holcombe Tap opened on the 5th of September 2018. This was after the previous pub The Masons Arms had been closed some time. A lot of hard work has gone into making Holcombe Tap what it is today and I’m pleased to see it go from strength to strength. Nice work guys. And last, but not least, Ramsbottom Running Club. Started by Rowan Ardill back in 2016 it’s gone from attracting around 25 people in the first week to well over 100 today. I interviewed Rowan back in episode 84 of the podcast. Not only has Rowan, with the help of many others, kept it going for three years, but Rowan also started HumpDay Coffee Club too, clearly someone who likes to keep himself busy. #notacompetitionquizquestion On the theme of birthdays, in what year was Ramsbottom Urban District Council formed, and a bonus point in what year did it end? The answer to this episodes #notacompetitionquizquestion will be revealed a little later on in the podcast episode. Another thing that popped up this week, almost literally was a new drinking fountain at Market Place. This is a great new service where anyone can fill up a water bottle for free. Some local businesses will do this for you too if you ask (look for a special sticker on their window) but this makes it a lot easier. Thanks for Heather Davenport of the Litter Picking Ramsbottom for the photo and heads up on this one. 7:40 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ This week we saw Ramsbottom head to Maltby Main for the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round, a match that both teams would have had something to gain in terms of money should they win. I was expecting a little more of a response from Maltby if I’m honest, and they did start well scoring first on 8 minutes with a goal from Anthony Wilson for Maltby Main. They came close to scoring a second too, but an attempted lob was well saved by Ramsbottom keeper Tom Stewart. The action then never stopped with Ramsbottom scoring on the 19th minute from Nic Evangelinos. It was Nic who scored Ramsbottoms second goal on 34 minutes from a cross from Iyrah Gooden. On the dead of half time Ramsbottom managed to get their third of the game with a goal from Chukwu. Going into the second half highly confident with a two goal lead Ramsbottom kept firing and managed to score yet another two. The first on 70 minutes from Chukwu, his second of the game and the final goal for Ramsbottom was from Jamie Rother on the 75th minute. A lovely 5-1 win for Ramsbottom, let’s see just how far we can get in the FA Cup shall we 😉 10:23 – Ramsbottom Cricket News: 🏏 Congratulations to Ramsbottom 3rd XI who beat Todmorden on Saturday making them the winners of either the league, or a cup or something, I honestly don’t know, I’ve just spent 10 minutes trying to work it out but it’s too much for my little head. Ramsbottom had 177 for 40 overs and Todmorden were all out for 60. This week sees the return, the return of the kids going back to school. For those parents who are just about to embark on this journey, I salute you and wish you godspeed. On the positive side, Ramsbottoms schools are decent, possibly why you moved here. I found this which was written by a Emma Robinson on Facebook, you might have heard it, if not and you’re a parent dropping your kids off at school for the first time, good luck: Dear Teacher – Emma Robinson I know you’re rather busy First day back, there’s just no time A whole new class of little ones And this one here is mine I’m sure you have things covered And have done this lots before But my boy is very little He hasn’t long turned four In his uniform this morning He looked so tall and steady But now beside your great big school I’m not quite sure he’s ready Do you help them eat their lunch? Are you quick to soothe their fears? And if he falls and hurts his knee Will someone dry his tears? And what if no-one plays with him? What if someone’s mean? What if two kids have a fight And he’s caught in between? You’re right, I have to leave now It’s time for him to go I’m sure he’ll learn so much from you Things that I don’t know Yes, I’m sure they settle quickly That he’s fine now without me I know he has to go to school It’s just so fast, you see It seems like just a blink ago I first held him in my arms It’s been my job to love, to teach To keep him safe from harm So, when I wave goodbye in a moment And he turns to walk inside Forgive me if I crumple Into tears of loss and pride I know as I give him one more kiss And watch him walk away, That he’ll never again be wholly mine As he was before today. Back to Ramsbottom then, well we’ve got another cafe on the horizon, this is one that popped into my peripheral vision only recently. It will be called Amelias and they are currently undergoing a bit of a renovation but planning on opening soon. They will be opening in the old Vitality Plus Health shop which has been closed for, I think around 18 months now. It’s on Bolton Street next door to Ramsbottom Tap if you’re unfamiliar exactly where I’m referring to. From their updates on Facebook it sounds like some electrical works have been completed so far, they’ve been working on the downstairs and presumably they’ll be having an upstairs too. I’m not yet sure what style of cafe they’re going to be but their description on their page says they are a heartwarming independent cafe & bar in the heart of Ramsbottom. Bringing freshly baked loveliness & colour to the North West. Speaking of renovations, did you get chance to visit The Chocolate Cafe this weekend? New owners Philip & Valerie have been working extremely hard to get the business back open since taking over. They’ve had a bit of a rocky start, firstly half of the tables that were ordered for the cafe didn’t arrive, oh and all the table legs for them. They do have this new kids area though: #notacompetitionquizquestion How many primary schools does Ramsbottom have? In the first match Ramsbottom faced Church & Oswaldtwistle with Ramsbottom winning by 81 runs As the hosts Bacup beat Rishton this meant a final between Ramsbottom and Bacup. Ramsbottom won the toss and we opted to bat first as we had in the first game against Church. In 20 overs we made 159 for 6. After a couple of early wickets Bacup were going well until their pro was caught by Bradley Fielding for 56 leaving Bacup 98 for 3. A confident victory and a nice trophy to be had, this is the 4th time we’ve won this trophy. This weather is ridiculous 🌧☂ , but we’re northern, we’ll get on with it. Today me and my family visited Burrs Country Park, not for the first time. If you’re unfamiliar, let me give you some information. Burrs has a mixture of open spaces, woodlands, river, ponds and canal. It is excellent for walking, running, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, bird watching, nature study and picnicking. Also, it has an excellent café (The Lampost Cafe) and pub (The Brown Cow) also the East Lancs railway has a station in the park. That information was primarily sourced from the Fields in Trust website, which coincidentally, has Burrs nominated for an award, it just takes our votes. Firstly, it’s no longer the EvoStik league, after several years of it being called that and me getting used to it, it’s now the BetVictor league, which no doubt will mean I’ll call it the EvoStik league on the podcast at some point during the season. The start for Ramsbottom has been great. We were at home to Widnes and the signs weren’t looking great when they managed to get two goals with no reply from us, however on 47 minutes with Iyrwah Gooden through on goal Widnes player Danny Shaw brought him down resulting in a red card. Half time arrived and with Widnes down to 10 men hope was there to get something out of the match. This was quickly realised with the restart of the match where Nic Evangelinos just a couple of minutes after starting the half scored our first goal. The second goal for Rammy was from Iyrwah Gooden after a free kick from Tom Kennedy, and that name came up again when 90 minutes Ruben Jerome scored a header from from a Tom Kennedy cross. Starbucks Ramsbottom Opens You might have not noticed, but Starbucks has now opened its doors. I asked the opinion of the This is Rammy audience for their thoughts. In this podcast episode I chat about one in particular which actually made me realise that Starbucks, might not actually be the bad thing some are expecting. Starbucks opening hours are: 6.30am – 9pm Monday to Friday 7am-9pm on Saturday 8am-9pm on Sunday Bury Book Buddies Launches Whilst on Facebook I came across a post in a local group by local resident Emma Davies. She has set up a group which is a little like Rammy Rocks, without the artistic requirement. Bury Book Buddies aims to provide some excitement in finding books that have been hidden around the town. Red Express will become hourly during the daytime As I wrote last week, the Ramsbottom to Manchester bus route, Red Express is now going to be hourly outside of peak hours. The Major reopens under new management I wasn’t expecting it to be quite this fast, but popular public house, The Major has re-opened as of the 2nd of August. New landlord Douglas Lingard and his wife June are quoted in the Bury Times saying: We are really looking forward to meeting new people and getting back into the brewery again. A week or so ago I caught up with owner Shaun Malik to find out more about their new venture. Do you think that Play Streets could work in Ramsbottom, or even if they’re a good idea? Our MP James Frith has recently posted on Facebook to encourage residents of local communities to get involved in the Play Streets initiative. James Frith on Facebook James goes on to explain in his Facebook post that: Play streets are quiet residential streets that are temporarily closed to through traffic so that local children can have the space to themselves for a few hours each week. [yop_poll id=”3″] Doug says: “Parks and open spaces are for playing on, not streets. It should come as no surprise that Ramsbottom is up for another award, ok technically it’s not RAMSBOTTOM, but I would argue that when anywhere in Ramsbottom is up for an award, then Ramsbottom as a whole is up for the award. The award that is on offer this time is Baratxuri is up for Neighbourhood Restaurant of the year as part of the Manchester Food and Drink Festival. Baratxuri have won awards before, in fact they won TWO amazing awards back in 2017 so let’s get voting to get another award back in Ramsbottom, especially as it looks like You can vote for Baratxuri on the voting page here. The Railway Pub has, after a little time, reopened to the public. There have been some top quality improvements made, including adding a ramp for wheelchair access. It reopened on Friday June 14th 2019. Did you know that a survey found that one in four secondary school students have used a private tutor, and this grows to almost half (41%) in London? On the podcast this week I interview local private tutor Helen Wilson who owns and runs A Star Tuition Group based out of Ramsbottom. A Star Tuition Group have been running for over ten years with Helen working full time at it for over the past three. Helen has been seeing fantastic results from her students, including all of her students that took a grammar school exam last year passing it. It’s not just families looking to send their children to grammar school though, Helen and A Star Tuition provide for a wide range of needs. Helen makes a special effort to ensure that not only do the children get results, but that they also enjoy it. As well as this, she encourages the children each year to enter a long running BBC Radio 2 competition called 500 words. This year Helen has three of her student in the semi finals! Youngsters make it through to the next round of the BBC 500 words – Bury Times ‘500 Words’ is the UK’s most successful short story-writing competition for children between the ages of 5 and 13. It was launched back in 2011, by Chris Evans for all children, no matter what their ability, experience, or background. In 2018 134,790 children entered the competition. One thing that Helen said during our interview that resonated with me was: If the school, the tutor and the family are working together as a unit, that’s a recipe for success. It might surprise you to learn that Bartisserie, which is situated at the top of Bridge Street facing the Tilted Vase/Urn is coming up to its one year anniversary since opening. That time feels like it has flown by, and as restaurants tend to be judged on if they can survive the first six months, Ethan of Bartisserie has done amazingly well. I caught up with him where he explains a bit about Bartisserie, his background in being a pastry chef, the famous people he’s served as well as the biggest mistake he’s ever made. Thanks for joining me on a relatively laid back episode of the podcast this week. The amazing weather we’ve had over the bank holiday weekend means that I’ve been spending lots of quality time with my family and all of it, pretty much has been centred around Ramsbottom. It’s one of the brilliant things about our town in that you can still do plenty and not travel, although I did go to Rawtenstall to get some compost. I’m going to bore you here but they had a great deal on compost in B&M, instead of £8 for 120 litres, it was £5, and as I had recently built two large raised beds, I needed a lot. This involved two trips, once to Rawtenstall where I picked up 7 120 litre bags and a trip later to Bury for 8 120 litre bags. Turns out, I could do with another one ideally. Anyway, they’re done now at least, so it’s time to actually plant things in them, but there’s a part of me that’s looking at them and just wants to them to remain pristine and perfect, but that’s silly. All of this had meant me spending more time in the sun than I usually should. I generally burn at the slightest gap in the clouds. Two things I’ve noticed whilst being out in the garden Ramsbottom this weekend. One, deer will actually come far closer to your property than you realise. I found this whilst working in my garden, turns out a baby deer had wandered into the wooded area at the back. This isn’t exactly the middle of the woods, but clearly it had gotten in there somewhere. The second was that Ramsbottom seems to have had an invasion of these little beetles, I’ve had a look online but I can’t find specifically what they are. Someone said Scarab Beetles, but I don’t think they are. #notacompetitionquizquestion This week’s question is: “In what year was the Ramsbottom Horticultural Society formed?” The answer to this episodes #notacompetitionquizquestion will be revealed a little later on in the podcast episode. 14:43 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ Ramsbottom United had a tough match ahead of them which was against Radcliffe FC. Currently second in the league, we were able to hold them to a nil nil draw at Radcliffe which is fantastic. Our next match is against Kidsgrove Athletic at home on Saturday the 27th of April. Kick off is at 3pm. If we get a draw, that should be enough for us to be in the play offs. If we lose, we’re reliant on a bit of luck from the results of the teams around us going against them. Once again, Ramsbottom has featured in The Times best places to live article. I believe we have slipped a little, maybe two or three places as we’re currently 9th for the whole of the North West region. I think we were sixth last year. You might be wondering how The Times comes up with their list of “Best Places”, well I was too, so I had a look into it. This is what they say: “We use robust statistics, consider a wide range of factors, from jobs, schools and broadband speed to culture, community spirit and local shops, and combine it all with our expertise and insight.” I think that’s a fair enough list of criteria to be judged against, I wonder if there was anything here that let us down or if they other places just got better since last year. Here are this years North West Region best places to live for 2019: Kirkby Lonsdale Altrincham Bollington Cartmel Knutsford Liverpool: Aigburth Manchester: Ancoats Manchester: Levenshulme Ramsbottom West Kirby There’s a few in there I’ve not heard of before, couldn’t point to them on a map at all. Quite interesting that Altrincham has slipped too, they were last years winners for our region. One of the reasons we feature regularly in things such as The Times Best Places to live is due to our vibrant nightlife and foodie scene, one of the jewels in our crown is the heavily awarded Levanter, who on the 6th of April turned 5 years old! Congratulations and thank you to the whole team of Levanter for raising the bar. https://twitter.com/LevanterFoods/status/1114504443448438784 5:56 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ Ramsbottom United 4 – 0 Droylsden If you’ve listened to the podcast before, you’ll certainly have heard me talk about Nic Evangelinos. Not only is he our highest goal scorer with 27 goals across all competitions but he scored all four goals in our last match against Droylsden on the 6th of April. It took just six minutes for us to get the first goal after Jamie Rainford won a penalty after being taken out in the area. The penalty was taken and scored by Nic. What could be the fastest ever hat trick for Ramsbottom (maybe?) Nic went on to score two more goals with the third being on just 11 minutes. Ramsbottom had three penalties awarded in total. One which was saved by the keeper, but the other two taken by Nic were put away. What a fantastic match to witness, hopefully you were able to get down. There are now just three matches left in the league, with two of them being at home. A massive match will be our Away game to Radcliffe Borough who are currently sitting second in the league, a win there would surely secure our playoff position. As they are currently battling it out to be league winners, there’s no way they’re going to give us an easy ride. One other thing of note, Ramsbottom United Captain Tom Kennedy has made the Evo-Stik West Team of Year! It has been a crazy week for Andy Smith, owner of Signature Bar. On Thursday he was shocked to find that he was unable to get into his own bar. On this episode I speak to him to find out what happened and where he goes from here. Something you might not be aware of as I certainly wasn’t, Andy is only 21 yet has been running this successful business in Ramsbottom since October. It’s clear to me from speaking to Andy that he has his business at the forefront of his mind and is working towards making it a continued success. This issue has not only made him stronger but that Signature Bar will continue to have the existing high standards that the customers expect. They have some big things planned for this weekend, naturally Andy would have liked to have had the bar open for Mother’s Day weekend and he feels terrible to have had to let so many people down due to the incident. 15:55 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ The last time I spoke to you I told you that there were two relatively straight forward matches coming up, well, how wrong was I? Ramsbottom United 1 – 2 Newcastle Town On Tuesday the 26th of April Ramsbottom United faced Newcastle Town at home, a match which should have been an almost guaranteed win, especially given our form recently and given the last time we faced them we were away and won 6-0. Sadly, it wasn’t to be. Newcastle Town arrived with a different script scoring in the first 5 minutes. Time ticked on but a goal from Kyle Jacobs just before half time brought the match level at 1-1. Despite many chances in the second half, the only goal was scored by Jordan Cole with a wonder free kick from the edge of the area. The match ended 2-1. Runcorn Linnets 1 – 2 Ramsbottom United It’s not all bad news though, our next match away to Runcorn Linnets, fellow promotion chasers was a successful result. Runcorn took the lead at just under the half hour mark with a goal from Mitchell Bryant. We were hoping this wasn’t going to be a repeat of the previous match, but knowing what was at stake, the guys dug deep and shortly after Runcorn player Peter Wylies handball gifted us a penalty, it was Nic Evangelinos who was able to keep his composure and convert the penalty. A second goal was scored for Ramsbottom by Jamie Rainford on 66 minutes, this goal being his seventh consecutive away match goal. The whistle was finally blown and our fantastic away form of 13 wins is testament to manager Chris Willcock and the brilliant season we’ve had so far. This result means that Ramsbottom are currently third in the league with 34 matches played on 64 points. Second place is Radcliffe FC with 32 matches played and 65 points with fourth placed Runcorn Linnets on 62 points with 33 matches played. Ramsbottom is to have a cycle shop again Ramsbottom Cycle Shop due to open. Carl Ashworth, owner of The Bike Fitting Room in Prestwich is opening a shop in Ramsbottom in the former premises of DJ Cycles on Bolton Road West. The current plan is to have it open for the first week of April, providing sales, servicing, repairs and free coffee to cyclists on a Sunday morning between between 9-10. The Bike Fitting Room will be based here by appointment, private maintenance sessions by appointment and no doubt Carl will bring other ideas forward once he gets going. Great to see a bike shop opening up again in Ramsbottom. The return of the: #notacompetitionquizquestion In what year was Ramsbottom formally made a town? The answer to this episodes #notacompetitionquizquestion is revealed later on in the podcast episode. Funding Achieved for local litter heroes Litter Picking Ramsbottom were successful in obtaining funding through “The Pitch” for funds for an Anti Litter campaign and equipment. You apply with an itemised list on an application form. So the amount is set at £1377, which is what we asked for. But we can choose to spend it on something that’s not on the list as long as it’s in keeping. Gary Neville is back, and this time he visited the Rose and Crown 6:05 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ Droylsden 2 Ramsbottom United 3 Tuesday 19th March 2019 The match started well with an early goal for Ramsbottom at just under 5 minutes from Jamie Rainford. Sadly, Rammy went down to ten men early on with the sending off of Kelvin Lugsden at 26 minutes. Droylsden were them able to pull one back at around the half hour mark with a goal from Oli Ford. The match continued to be played well by the ten men of Rammy, and this was shown with another goal from Jamie Rainford at around an hour on the clock. Not long after, Droylsden were able to pull another back to bring it to 2-2 with very little time left on the clock for Ramsbottom to get a good result. Much to our relief, our talisman Nick Evangelinos managed to put a final one away in the dying minutes bringing the match to a conclusion shortly after with the result 3-2 to Ramsbottom. Ramsbottom United 2 Prescot Cables 0 Saturday 23rd March 2019 Ramsbottom hosted Prescot Cables at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium. Going in as favourites to get a result, Ramsbottom did great by getting an early goal, another from Jamie Rainford, that’s three goals in the last two matches he’s scored, not that I’m complaining. On 81 minutes, on his debut, Spencer Harris managed to score a cracking header from the cross of Nick Evangelinos. This win puts us very much within a shot of the Playoffs. There are now only six matches left of the season, we need to be getting more of these results, especially from teams we should be knocking five past. Of the remaining matches, four will be at home and just two away. As the league currently stands, we’ll be playing 15th placed Newcastle Town on Tuesday the 26th of March at home. On Saturday the 30th we’re playing 4th placed Runcorn Linnets away, very important and difficult match there. We’re playing 13th placed Droylsden again this time at home on Saturday the 4th of April. Saturday the 20th of April sees us facing 5th placed Mossley in Ramsbottom, another tough match. The last two matches are away to Radcliffe Borough on Monday 22nd of April who are currently 2nd in the league and the final match will be at home to Kidsgrove Athletic on the 27th of April who are currently 11th. We’ve clearly got some tough matches coming up with half of our last six matches being with teams also competing for a playoff place. Ramsbottom United currently sit third in the league with our win over Prescot Cables on Saturday pushing us up from fourth. We have played 32 matches and have 61 points. It’s a busy podcast episode this week, sheesh. Recently I was in conversation with Rowan Ardill at one of his Hump Day Coffee Club days (if you’ve not heard of this before, there’s some information coming up). Rowan asked had I saw the development works ongoing at the Petrol Station on Ramsbottom Lane, I hadn’t as I’d not been up there recently. This chat started the thoughts with regards to the independence of Ramsbottom and whether or not the introduction of a Starbucks locally is a threat to it. On Thursday the 21st of February there was a public meeting which was arranged by James Frith to discuss issues with a representative from the old Mondi Papermill site and a representative from the banks to discuss their positions in Ramsbottom. What actually happened was there were no representatives from either banks or from the old papermill site, which I make my opinion of on this episode of the podcast. Don’t forget that this is a podcast, you can listen by clicking the play button above, or subscribe to get this and any future episodes straight to you. It’s difficult not to dedicate this whole episode to Ramsbottom United given their recent amazing and well publicised win over Weymouth, but I will keep the regular format and you can hear more about that in the Ramsbottom United section. There has been several bits of news recently for Ramsbottom that I want to talk about. One of them regards the proposal of 200 car parking spaces being made available for Ramsbottom. Surprisingly, this hasn’t had quite the expected response. It does seem to be a bit of, you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. Nobody would argue that there isn’t a parking problem in Ramsbottom, you just have to visit during various times of the day, it really is pot luck if you find a space. So you’d think 200 spaces would be welcomed. Not quite. Taking out the quite tiresome back and forth bickering between the Conservative and Labour councilors about who came up with the idea first and who is at fault for it not happening sooner. I know of several people who have voiced concerns not just over the location but also due to the parking expecting to be paid parking. Firstly, the location for the parking site is currently planned for next to Ramsbottom Leisure Centre. There is currently a smallish car park there for the centre itself adjacent to which is a children’s play park. Now, if the plans prove to remove that playpark, I’ll be arguing against the carpark, if however they plan to be on the areas around, such as some of the frankly boggy field, then I’m less concerned by it. There have been suggestions to use the old Mondi Paper Mill site, which is kind of like saying why not just use everyone’s drives who are out during the day. It’s private land, and you can’t just plan a carpark on it. Ramsbottom does need parking, does it need 200 parking places, apparently it does. My opinion would be that a small amount of parking which allowed some of the green space to remain, and possibly even be improved (although I have heard before of schemes which include regeneration which then unsurprisingly run out of money once the main bit has been done) would be meeting in the middle? I’m not sure, it’s another of those age old Ramsbottom arguments, we need something, we don’t know where to put it but wherever it goes, someone won’t be happy. Another item of news is that a proposal has been made by Councillor Kevin Thomas in his maiden speech at the full Bury Council meeting to move towards making Bury a Plastic Free Council by 2022. This was also reported by The Bury Times You can see the full meeting on YouTube, I’ve skipped straight to Kevin Thomas.  Our very own Ramsbottom has been leading the way with the fabulous Fulfilled Plastic Free shop being the first of its kind in Bury. Bury Times this week posted several pages of food hygiene ratings for Bury. Thankfully I can report that the lowest rating Ramsbottom has is a 3 star, which seems to be classed as “Generally Satisfactory”. I’ve got the full list of places coming out this coming week on the website, so keep your eyes open for that. 17:00 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ What a season we’re having. We’ve played two matches since the last episode of the podcast, one of which was in the FA Trophy where Ramsbottom United (and 17 fans) took on the monumental trip to Weymouth down on the south coast, on a Tuesday night. That’s around a 550 miles roundtrip which would roughly take around 10 hours. That’s some feat, even on a weekend but to do that midweek really does take some dedication. Thankfully the 17 supporters were treated to a masterclass of football. That last kick of the game equaliser when Weymouth came here could have been considered a bit of luck, well if it was, that luck continued on the away leg. After some fierce pressing attacks from Ramsbottom, we were able to get a goal after one of the Weymouth players headed our cross into the back of his net. A great start, but the home team quickly got back into the match equalising just a few short minutes later. Little did they know at the time that this would be their last goal of the match. Goals from Eddie Moran and Jason Carey on the 54th and 79th minutes were enough to sink Weymouth. Not only that but we got a penalty towards the end of the game which was missed but at 3-1 I don’t think anyone was too bothered. Katie Worsick has described the match as “one of the best footballing experiences of her life” Which possibly makes up a little bit for the journey which took just over 14 hours including the match where she arrived back in Ramsbottom with three others in the car at 3am. The coach with players and fans on didn’t get back to Ramsbottom until 4am. I’m sure the singing was still going well into the early hours. This has been an historic moment for Ramsbottom United. We are now furthers in the FA Trophy than we’ve ever been, down to the last 16 with the next match against AFC Flyde on the 2nd of February at home. This brings me on to our second match, where you’d be forgiven for thinking that we’d have possibly had a rest with the next match coming up, well you’d be wrong. On Saturday the 19th of January Ramsbottom United were away to Glossop North End. I think a 5 nil stonking is an accurate description. The first goal for The Rams was by Jamie Rother seconds before the end of the first half at 45 minutes taking us into the break 1 nil up. Then after the break, regular goalscorer and fan favourite Nic Evangelinos scored at 51 minutes, then another just five minutes later, that’s 12 goals in total that Nic has now scored. Not to be outdone, Jamie Rother scored another on 71 minutes taking the score to 4 without reply. A final goal for The Rams was scored towards the end of the match. This is our best away win since 9th Feb 2013 when we beat Garforth Town 5-0 and not only that, we are unbeaten away since Chris Willcock took over at the beginning of October having won 9 and drawn 4 on the road. As you may very well know, Sunday the 13th of January was “Rubber Duckie Day”. I obviously didn’t need to tell you that, you knew already, but assuming you didn’t, you do now. So what’s that got to do with Ramsbottom? Well, not only is there the giant duck rubber race every year with Ramsbottom Rotary Club, it also happens that this year, Ramsbottom and podcast regular Paul Jenkins is on a mission. That mission is what he’s called “The People Who Celebrated Everything“. Paul Jenkins taking part in National Cut Your Energy Day Throughout the year, Paul will be taking part in whatever day event it happens to be, for example he’s already had National Trivia Day – January 4th, National Cut Your Energy Day – January 10th and now National Rubber Duckie Day. Noticing that it was Rubber Duckie Day coming up, I offered to loan out my giant duck. I know you might be thinking “what nonsense these national days are”, but ultimately, it’s a bit of fun in an already too serious world. Why not check out the Facebook page and take part in your own days? Whilst I’m talking about it, let me set this weeks #notacompetitionquizquestion. #notacompetitionquizquestion The question this week is, on what day is International Podcast Day? The answer to this episodes #notacompetitionquizquestion will be revealed a little later on in the podcast episode. 4:50 – Buy brew, get book. I just found out about the Tottington Tea Room Free Book offer that is currently happening for winter, or at least for a limited time. Tottington Tea Room is owned by Kelly-Ann Simister from Holcombe Brook. It was opened back in October last year and is situated inside Tottington Centre. This contains a library, and obviously a café/tea room too. It’s only 2.5 miles away, a 6 minute drive or just under an hours walk. One person I know who has visited there is ‎Christine Gillies who is local to Ramsbottom* 7:35 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ Ramsbottom United are currently the team in the lowest league in the cup. The match we had most recently was Weymouth at home, which took place on Saturday the 12th of January 2019. Weymouth are currently third in the Evo-Stik League Premier South, a number of places above Ramsbottom and at least one league (possibly two but I can’t work it out). Weymouth, as expected were not pushovers, but I suspect they expected less from our team who more than matched them in quality and passion. The first goal of the match was for Weymouth by Jake McCarthy on 37 minutes. Half time came with no additional goals, despite many chances from both sides. We broke through finally with a brilliant goal from Nic Evangelinos on 68 minutes. However, not long before the end of the match on 83 minutes, Weymouth scored again with a goal from Calvin Brooks making it 2-1. The minutes were going, we didn’t know how many minutes of added time we had. 90 minutes came, and went, and then, on the last minute of added time, Iyrwah Gooden scored for Ramsbottom United making it 2-2. This draw means that for the first time in the clubs history, The Rams will be in the competitions Third Round draw on Monday. That’s the good news, the bad news is that on Tuesday we need to travel down to Weymouth (which is quite nice, I’ve been there). This is over a 5 hour drive and about 270 miles. I hope we can get a full squad and come back victorious. Kick off is at 7:45pm on Tuesday the 15th. If there was ever a subject which will get people heated up, it’s parking in Ramsbottom and this week Bury Council have proposed that a new “no loading at any time” I believe that’s double yellows but feel free to correct me, is to be introduced on Ramsbottom Lane. This was reported this week in The Bury Times who reports that the scheme is expected to come into force sometime in summer 2019. The location in Ramsbottom which is earmarked for this change is arguably a stupid place to park. The road is extremely busy at times and narrows in places causing problems regardless of parked cars. There are already some parking restrictions in place on Ramsbottom Lane, this would be an extension of those. The problem I have with this is that the parking, although badly placed, is at least parking which Ramsbottom is badly in need of. If you were to travel to any other town in the local vicinity I’d argue that you’ll find a parking space much easier than in Ramsbottom. With the cameras on the supermarket parking and schemes such as this taking any road parking away, where are visitors to the town supposed to park? Once again, surely it’s time to pressure the owners of the old Mondi Paper Mill site to put it to good use and create some additional parking. Even if it was temporary. Christmas is here in our household, but not a patch on this local resident! Last episode I mentioned how we’d not yet put our tree up in our house, well that’s all changed this weekend as it did finally go up. It’s only an artificial one, but it’s not too shabby. We have had real before but with a one year old crawling around putting all sorts from the floor in her mouth I didn’t want to add pine needles to her diet by accident. Not that you’d ever do that on purpose? However, I was driving down the previously mentioned Ramsbottom Lane when I noticed this fantastic arrangement of Christmas lights and had to pull over to take a photo. If this is your house, or collection of houses, well done, very well done. I also visited the St Andrews PTFA Christmas Fair and it was heaving. Thanks to everyone that came down and got involved. With the fantastic array of prizes for the raffle along with a great variety of volunteers running stalls with games and things to buy, the school managed to raise just short of £4000 which will go a long way for 2019. The money raised previously has already been spent on revamping the paintings in the playground. In addition to putting up the Christmas tree in our house, I finally got around to watching A Monster Calls, you might remember them filming in Ramsbottom back in, actually, let’s make that this weeks: #notacompetitionquizquestion The question is: “When did Hollywood come to Ramsbottom to film our town for the film A Monster Calls?” I’m looking for month and year. Church Fields Granted Tree Preservation Order Some good news for Ramsbottom and the local environment this week too. Keith Burroughs of the Ramsbottom Heritage Society announced on Facebook that the area of Ramsbottom known as Church Fields has been granted a Tree Preservation Order. This was obtained by Ramsbottom Heritage who had been trying to protect the land since 2014. The land which is owned by Peel Holdings was considered potentially at risk of development. Let’s face it, there’s plenty of development going on in Ramsbottom currently in areas that don’t need it, and not enough in areas that do *cough* Mondi Paper Mill Site. Keith went on to state that this particular level of protection is “very difficult to overturn in any planning application”. He also states that it was one of the Heritage Society Members that came up with the idea of suggesting the whole of Church Fields to be a natural extension of Crow Lumb Wood, and wrote the application themselves. We’re in to December and lots of people have already started putting up their Christmas decorations. I’m not sure if you have yet but I do like how Christmasy it’s starting to look around our town, especially now that the big tree is up in Market Place. Well one thing is for sure this week, I’m certainly glad that I didn’t get around to fully writing the show last night as today two bits of big news came out. The first bit of news is regarding the bride that The Waterside pub used to stand on in Summerseat. You might recall the terrible flooding back on boxing day 2015 that came to Ramsbottom. This flood didn’t just ruin Ramsbottom, it destroyed what was The Waterside pub in Summerseat. The pub itself had been closed for some time and the flood was the final nail in the coffin. Since The Waterside had collapsed, the bridge that it stood on was no longer safe for pedestrians or vehicles. The Council did repair the bridge so that it was safe for pedestrian access in March 2016, but without the ability to make further improvements due to the land not being owned by the council where the pub once stood. Today, the Bury Times have reported that the Government have now approved the compulsory purchase order that the Council submitted earlier this year. This means that potentially the bridge could be repaired and opened to vehicles as early as next year. The plans were approved in May of this year which include creation of a new walkway. The second bit of news comes with the announcement that Head for the Hills 2019 will not happen, not here in Ramsbottom, nor in the rumoured future location Burrs Country Park, or will it? This news is also this week’s not a competition quiz question. #notacompetitionquizquestion The question this week is, in what year did the Ramsbottom Rhythm and Blues Festival launch? This is, what you might say was the precursor to the Ramsbottom Festival. You’ll get the answer, a little bit later on in the show. Have a listen to what The Met announced on their website today: Since we created the festival we’ve seen big changes to the festival market, with more events than ever taking place in Manchester and Lancashire, some no doubt buoyed by what we achieve in Ramsbottom. This means Head For The Hills as you know it will not take place in 2019. This will be a disappointment to some, but our plan is to come back with something brilliant in 2020. The words that stand out for me there are “Head For The Hills as you know it will not take place in 2019”. As you know it. Does this mean there could be some smaller musical happenings under the Head for the Hills umbrella? Who knows, but one thing’s for sure is that it will not be taking place at Ramsbottom Cricket club in 2019, and if rumours are to be believed it won’t in 2020 either, but they’re all rumours at present. The reason The Met have decided against running the festival again in 2019 they state is: “for the first time since we started we weren’t able to grow and improve on the previous year to the level that we would have liked”…  “the decision to take a year out to improve our ability to deliver brilliant festivals in 2020 and beyond has been taken by us all”. With regards to a potential site change, the FAQ on the Head for the Hills website says: We’ve had a brilliant time at Ramsbottom Cricket Club over the last 8 years, and we know a number of local residents love having a festival of such high quality within walking distance. The current site has its challenges, but we love it. We’ll take this all into consideration while we plan how to deliver the best festival possible. We wouldn’t be doing it properly if we didn’t consider all the options open to us. As a Bury-based organisation, whatever happens we’ll be serving residents of the Bury area (and we do love it in Rammy). How do you feel about this announcement? The Met is open to suggestions and comments, you can get hold of them by email on [email protected] Velvet opens new shop on Bridge Street Velvets old shop Outside of those two big announcements, Velvet have just opened a fantastic new shop on Bridge Street, this is their second shop in Ramsbottom now since they moved from their old location on Square Street to the former premises of W & D Scholes on the corner of Bridge Street and Silver Street. This was a good move for them as it increased footfall significantly. Velvets New Shop Now, just a few years since that move, they have opened a second shop not far from Ramsbottom Station on Bridge Street in the former Natwest Bank building which sat next to the old Ramsbottom Police station. The new shop is aimed more at children’s clothes stocking some very fashionable items from ranges such as the high end Joules range of clothes. Next up is the Ramsbottom News, however, before that I want to give you the answer to this week’s #notacompetitionquizquestion. The question this week was, in what year did the Ramsbottom Rhythm and Blue Festival launch. Think you got it? The answer was….. 2004. This was 7 whole years before the first Ramsbottom Festival. 13:33 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ Ramsbottom United 2 – 1 Pickering Town (27th November) Now, on to the regular Ramsbottom United section which is also newsworthy. For the first time since 2014, our fantastic Ramsbottom United have managed to get into the first round proper of The FA Trophy. This came about after we got a fantastic result at home to Pickering Town. Having already visited Pickering in the previous match where we held them to a 0-0 draw, Pickering were now the ones having to make the 100+ mile journey to Ramsbottom. That’s two long journeys we’ve had recently in the FA Trophy. The Rams scored early on in the first half with a great goal from regular scoresheet feature and November player of the month Nic Evangelinos. Pickering Town were able to get an equaliser in the form of a penalty after a questionable decision by the referee. A nervous second half then continued but The Rams soon dominated sending in several shots on the Pickering Town goal mouth. We were able to finally get the ball in the back of the net on the 89th minute with a rocket from Kyle Jacobs. That was Kyles first goal for Ramsbottom since signing, however given he’s a defender I think that’s acceptable 🙂 Ramsbottom United 5 – 1 Yaxley (20th November) The match before we played Pickering was a goal fest against Yaxley on our return leg at home. This was the match which took several hours of travel time for each time. We got a 1-1 result away but the reply ended in a 5-1 smashing. A thoroughly enjoyable match. Ramsbottom United 2 – 3 Runcorn Linnets (1st December) Sadly, our record unbeaten run of 13 games came to an end against 1st placed Runcorn Linnets on Saturday the 1st of December. The next match for Ramsbottom is an away league game against Kidsgrove Athletic who are currently 13th in the table. Looking at their form and ours, there is a good chance this will end in a draw, which as an away fixture, I’ll take, but obviously I’d prefer the win. This week, Ramsbottom sits a town divided. The division has been caused by two topics close to residents hearts. There has been a hive of activity on the website this month related to two posts in particular. These both concen the future of The Grants Arms and the specific have all been around the plans for The Grants Arms. If you’re unfamiliar with The Grants Arms, it’s a large building pretty central to Ramsbottom sitting on Market Place in Ramsbottom. I talked in more detail back in episode 114 where the discussion of the proposal of turning the building from a pub/hotel into offices first came up. On that episode, even I was divided so it’s understandable how the town as a whole is feeling. The activity around this on the site this week blew up since I posted an appeal from John Ireland However, the second topic that has divided Ramsbottom this week is also related to this week’s not a competition quiz question. #notacompetitionquizquestion The question is, in what year was the “Tilted Vase” sculpture by Edward Allington installed in Market Place? You’ll get the answer, a little bit later on in the show. So, as I mentioned, The Tilted Vase has been the second topic that has the town divided. The reason being, there still seems to be a large number of residents who really, for want of a better word, can’t stand it. Some on Facebook have even gone as far as to suggest that if you like it, you have to be from out of town. (anyone who hasn’t had at least seven generations born and bred in Ramsbottom could be classed as from Out of Town 😂) 6:00 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ On the day that this podcast episode is released, Ramsbottom United will be facing Yaxley in the second leg of our FA Trophy match. It’s most likely that you’ll already know the result, however, as I don’t have a time machine let’s work with what I have. As you know if you listened to the podcast last week, Ramsbottom United have been on a good run of form lately. We’re sitting nicely in fourth place in the Evostick West Division table and have already played away to Yaxley in that dreadful fixture hours away from home. This good run of results has brought up another fantastic stat from our very own Ramsbottom United regular Katie Worsick, also know as Little Katie (at least on Twitter, I’m not sure about anywhere else). The stat is that currently, Ramsbottom United have 10 matches unbeaten, 9 of which have been under new manager Chris Wilcock. Back in 2013/2014 season, we had a run of 10 unbeaten games (2 being draws and 8 of which were wins). Currently we’re matching this, albeit 4 draws and 6 wins. As the match we are playing tonight (or have played if you listen to this after Tuesday) is a reply match, it cannot end in a draw. We will either win, or lose. Good luck lads. If you’re not, maybe it’s time to take a visit? We’d love to have you! Of course, this past weekend saw Ramsbottoms Remembrance Service for Armistice Day marking 100 years since World War 1 ended. This is always an emotional time, but this year especially given the anniversary. Mooch gift shop Speaking of going out and experiencing it, this weekend me and my son were on a walk to Stubbins, well, I was walking and he was riding his bike. We got as far as the Papermill, we saw Euans garden which is just before the papermill as you’re leaving Ramsbottom on the right. Well, one thing I’d been obvious to was that there’s a new shop opened up called Mooch. Mooch is a gift shop which is situated underneath what used to be Bevs Barbers, which is no Pink Rhino hairdressers. It’s opposite the big metal “Urn” in Market Place. You might easily miss it, as I have before as it’s down the small alley and there is a door on the left to enter. Check out their Facebook Page and the next time you’re in Ramsbottom, poke your nose in and say Hi, I’ve been led to believe they’re quite lovely. 6:30 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽ As you may recall from last episode, Ramsbottom United had a bit of a journey to undertake for the next FA Trophy 2nd qualifying match. The match took place between Ramsbottom United and Yaxley, a journey of almost 160 miles each way on a Tuesday. Not only that but it wasn’t even real grass when they got there with Yaxley having a 3G pitch in place. No doubt arriving tired after the long journey, the team had a tough task ahead of them. Yaxley went ahead early on at around 15 minutes after sustained attacks on our goal. This was Ramsbottoms first goal conceded in around 462 minutes of play, a feat in itself. Thankfully, United remained strong and were able to bring the score level around the hour mark with a goal from Ruben Jerome. His fourth goal in his last four matches. It got better as within five minutes of the goal from Jerome, Evangelinos was able to slot home his third goal in his last three outings. Sadly, we were unable to keep this lead and Yaxley equalised. The game finished two all. The replay match will thankfully be played at home at the Riverside on the 20th of November, another Tuesday. This time though, it’s Yaxley who will need to make the horrendous journey to us, and they might be a little surprised to find real grass when they come to us. The next match for Ramsbottom in the league is this Saturday, the 17th of November where we will play Colwyn Bay away. Kick off is at 3pm. Last season we played Colwyn three times, twice in the league and once in the cup. We managed a draw, loss and win last season. Welcome to another episode of the podcast, last weekend it was Bonfire Night and in last weeks episode I listed several places over the weekend. Me and my son were able to get to the Cricket Club for the display which was cracking, another fantastic event on our local calendar. My son was very tired towards the end, so we left shortly after the fireworks had finished. I hope you managed to get to a display if you were planning on doing so. New Tea Shop Opens in Holcombe Another week and another new place to visit. This time in Holcombe, just opposite Hoysters Bar situated in Holcombe Mews. The building has previously been a bridal shop and most recently a children’s footwear shop. The new tea shop is called Hollands at Holcombe and is being set up by Mother and Daughter team Ann and Shelley Holland’s. They are promising to offer a “Teastro” service (coming from a combination of Tearoom and Bistro) serving home cooked breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas and homemade cakes. I know me and the family will no doubt be nipping down the road to give it a try. I’m lucky I don’t generally put weight on otherwise since moving to Ramsbottom I’d be in real trouble with all these food venues opening. Re-emergence of Country Club planning application Only recently I’ve been talking about the planning application submission for The Grants Arms in Ramsbottom. It seems they’re a bit like buses in that no sooner than one application arrives, than another is close behind it. This time it’s another attempt at creating a Country Club in the Nuttall Lane/Whittingham Drive area of Ramsbottom. Bury Times have reported that the planning application includes leisure facilities, a restaurant and bar, three function rooms and car parking. The developer had submitted similar proposals for the site last year, but were withdrawn months later after receiving over 500 objections. There are good points and bad points for this, the most obvious good points being that it’s more business for Ramsbottom with more jobs for local people. The bad news is that this area is already heavily congested with traffic due to the single access road of Nuttall Lane. You can comment on the project on the Bury Council Planning site where the application is listed under reference 64433. Mary Bell Flying high at 100 Now for some lighter news, local Resident Mary Bell of Lavender Hills Residential Home decided that when she turned 100, she wouldn’t just sit around and watch the leaves fall out of her windows, no no, she had set her sights much more adventurous. Mary did apparently want to do a parachute jump, but that wasn’t possible, but she was able to fly over Ramsbottom in a light aircraft including taking control herself at one point. Hits Radio Manchester have a video of the action in their tweet here: https://twitter.com/hitsmcrnews/status/1058009465570648066 Ramsbottom United News: I don’t know about you, but I’m really loving this rejuvenated Ramsbottom United team under new manager Chris Willcock. Ramsbottom have now won 5 games in a row under the new manager. Despite losing 6 players we’ve actually signed around 9 new players who are already making an impact at Rammy. You may remember that I mentioned last episode of the podcast the large number of players who left, I’ve since been told this is pretty standard when a new manager comes in. No players at Ramsbottom are under contract, so they are free to come and go as they like. Something I didn’t know at the time. Although this week’s podcast is a little later than usual, I’m quite pleased as I’ve got even better news with regards to Ramsbottom than I would normally have. Off the back of our recent 3-0 win at Skelmersdale United (where incidentally we had a great turnout for travelling fans), as I record this, tonight we beat Prescot Cables 4-0 in the league to leapfrog them and a few others to sit nicely in 4th place in the league. Not only that, but with tonight’s win, that means we’ve scored a whopping 12 goals in the last 4 games whilst conceding none. That’s worth shouting about alone. TWe were due to play Yaxley or Wisbech in the FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round this Saturday the 10th of November, however a draw tonight means we’ll be playing the winner of that replay match the following Tuesday the 13th. Originally, Yaxley were due to play Kidsgrove the other week in the First Qualifying Round but the game was postponed as Kidsgrove were found to have played an ineligible player in the previous round v Wisbech (Kidsgrove won that match). It was then decided by the FA that Kidsgrove were disqualified and Wisbech should play Yaxley instead. This isn’t good news as it means a long trip for our players and fans on a Tuesday, this trip would have been much better on the Saturday. Before I move on though, ne more little fact, we’re just one win short from our best ever winning streak which was a run back in Nov/Dec 2014 where we had a 6 game winning streak under previous managers Johnson and Morley (the most successful managers in our history).
