IS UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE A RIGHT OR A PRIVILEGE: will it be Medicare for All or Medicare is Broke and Medicaid for All

from The American Enterprise Manifesto: My America's Vision of Peace and Nonviolence for Humanism · host Jerry Rhoads

My career has been in health care delivery and documentation systems for justifying the amount a provider is paid and visualizing what they should be paid.  I have been involved in this pursuit since 1962. My companies have been involved since 1977.  A CPA public accounting firm, a software development company, a management consulting business and finally an owner of and administrator of three nursing homes.   This only qualifies me for the history that I have participated in and the ideas I will present.  Are health care services a right or a privilege?  Is it currently doing either?  If not why not?  If not, how can it be more cost effective and efficient in delivering better quality of life?  What is the difference cost and effectiveness if we prevent rather than just pursue treatment?  Aha, that certainly applies to the Corona Virus pandemic doesn't it?  This is where the saying a pound of prevention is worth trillions in protection.  Our current situation will prove that undoubtedly as we overcome the fear of it and learn how to prevent it in the context of each of us.  That being preserving our own health as a responsibility for the front line of preventive health care for lowering economic costs and the loss of life.  Of course, those who prevent will live longer, stronger happier lives.  But is that going to happen by providing free health care because it's a right?  Probably not ... the saying that moral incentives are what we say we want but economic incentives is what we respond to.  A tax deduction is better than charity so to speak.  So let's say, it's a right to have a universal health care plan where everyone in America is covered for everything every time without qualifications and exceptions ... seems a little far fetched doesn't it especially when the costs escalate and the care is compromised and rationed because its not sustainable? Then what can we expect if health care is a privilege not a right?  Does that mean we have to have a physical every year to determine if we qualify and if we don't we have to  lose weight or change our lifestyle?  Maybe maybe not.  What if we have our savings account that is funded as we go along by withholding from our paycheck, matched by our employer deposited in our personal account with a mutually owned health insurance company for processing our claims and recording our return on the investment in our own health?  A win win when we work towards staying in better shape, eat well, sleep well, void well for the betterment of our own health and welfare plus our savings account.  Far fetched ... no not in America the bountiful and entrepreneurial.    This episode is dedicated to exploring that concept that I call SHIFT the paradigm from public health to a Self Health Investment Funding Trust for the betterment of each individual's health and the economic health of the greater good.
