It's a Privilege to Have Conversations With Brilliant Writers and Thinkers

from Walter Rhein Podcast · host Walter Rhein

Hello Everyone!I posted the above picture as a note a few weeks ago, but maybe some of you missed it. The story is that there’s a woman who works the drive through at Burger King who once gave my dog a piece of bacon. Ever since that day, whenever we pull up to the window, he sticks his head out to demand his piece of bacon.Anyone who doesn’t think dogs can communicate is fooling themselves. He’s a good boy… but you can’t blame a dog for wanting some bacon. He doesn’t normally look that intimidating but this is about bacon!BACON!Anyway…The kids are set to head off to school tomorrow. They’re always excited about going back to school which is the opposite of what I was like. I was a lot more like Calvin from ‘Calvin and Hobbes.’ In fact, I was almost exactly like Calvin (though I wasn’t as mean to Susie).Last Sunday I did my first ‘Sunday Newspaper’ and I received some encouraging responses. I think I’ll try to make that a regular feature. That way you can try to keep up with me during the week, but if you don’t have time to read something, you can just delete it from your inbox and peruse the link again on Sunday. That article got me a new paid sponsor, so that’s all it takes to convince me!I have a lot of Substack Lives planned for the next week and I wanted to give you a preview of that. These Lives are fantastic. There are so many brilliant and accomplished people out there, and it helps to shed the layers of indoctrination by getting together and comparing notes.Seriously.I also enjoy seeing all the friendly names and profile pics come floating by. I do my best to answer questions, but sometimes I have to concentrate to compose a thought. I don’t like dead air time. That’s why I close my eyes or look out the window. We’ve been wrestling with some complex topics. Here’s the schedule. All the times are central standard time (I have to mention this twice because time zones cause endless confusion).Tuesday 9/210 AM CST: With Nick Paro. We’ll be talking about notes, politics, and Epstein. We have to keep talking about the horrors of our country if we’re ever going to fix them.Wednesday 9/310 AM CST: I’ll be doing my anti-racism talk with Will Fullwood and Arturo Dominguez. These guys are both great and I’m excited to bring them together. The topic is whether racism is the disease or a symptom of something even worse.12 PM CST: I’ll be talking with Wendy The Druid 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🌈 and maybe Brandon Ellrich. I’m looking forward to this talk. We’re going to discuss the interconnection between people who experience various forms of hate.Thursday 9/411 AM CST: I’ll be talking about living abroad with Maggie Jon and Peter William Murphy (assuming he got back from his travels).1 PM CST: I’ll be talking about movies with Ben Ulansey and Dana DuBois! We have so much fun with our movie talks, it’s a way to get to know more about people and avoid the weight of our dystopian times.Friday 9/512 PM CST: I’ll be discussing Medium and Boost with Fran Johns.Tuesday 9/9(Note: Tuesday September 9th is the right date, I made a mistake when I first posted this)10 AM CST: I’ll be talking with author Paul Vigna about his book ‘The Almightier.’ I’ve been reading it, it’s great!I have more stuff scheduled for next week, but I’ll do another one of these posts perhaps Monday. This post also serves to tag everyone and remind them that we have something scheduled! Almost all of my lives are in the morning. Please let me know if that just doesn’t work for you and I can try to schedule one or two in the afternoon, or in the middle of the night. It’s always a work in progress! Thanks for stopping by, see you in the Lives! You all make this newsletter happen! Thanks for your sponsorship!
