Welcome to the very first episode of the Wise Body podcast!! I am so excited you are here with me as we dive into topics related to eating disorder recovery and body health. In this episode I share a little about me, why I decided to do the Wise Body Podcast and the top 5 eating disorder myths I most commonly hear in my practice. Some may surprise you and so I’m here to break it all down in a way that makes sense. The Wise Five: In each episode I ask 5 questions and present 5 takeaways. Here they are from Episode 1: The Top 5 Eating Disorder Myths Debunked. Here are the Sparknotes but for more please listen in!Eating disorders are just a fad or a phase- There most certainly are not. They are a serious psychological, medical and emotional disorder that often requires treatment of some kind. They have the highest mortality rate of any psychological disorder behind opioid disorders. Eating disorders don’t discriminate- They affect all races, ethnicities, genders, socio-economic status. People with food scarcity can also struggle with eating disorders. Many people with eating disorders don’t feel “sick enough” and invalidate their own experience. All too often, people with eating disorders say this, and it is so dangerous because it sustains the eating disorder, which can become life-threatening even if one feels “fine.” Normal labs indicate health- not true! Many people with normal bloodwork can die from an eating disorder. Normal labs may indicate the body trying to overcompensate for malnourishment.A low heart rate means I’m a good athlete. Many athletes I’ve worked with have told me their medical providers have said this to them, but what is often missed is asking questions about food intake and eating disorder behaviors. We need to ask the hard questions. My Website: https://www.drhewes.com/My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsarahhewesThe Wise Body YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvOKmICHyAdq22q5Q3usbyASign up for a free consultation call with me:https://www.drhewes.com/contactMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/greenhouse/returnLicense code: QZKDSNZ9WTW7O0ICPodcast editor: Bob Montalban Email: [email protected]
