The Truth About Boxing and Eating Disorders with Pro boxer Danny O'Connor

Today I sat down with Olympic and Pro boxer Danny O'Connor to talk about his book Weight Class, where he gives a raw and honest account about his eating disorder while pursuing his professional boxing career. He’s won many national titles including the US National Championship and the National Golden Gloves and is thought of as one of the best fighters of our time. Danny turned pro in 2008, competed at the highest level for more than ten years, had 31 wins, and held the WBC International Silver Super Lightweight Championship. Now, Danny is a powerful advocate for weight class sports and eating disorders in men. He is also the founder of the DO Boxing Academy, a youth wellness and enrichment program that integrates non-contact fitness boxing and mindfulness for young people seeking a safe, structured, and supportive environment to channel anger and stress, build connection and learn emotion regulation, all the things Danny learned when he first stepped into the ring at 19.Danny also started bitelikeaman.com, a virtual support community for men and athletes with eating issues. Lastly, as another way to give back and honor his past, he’s volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate where he’s assigned to support a young person involved in the court system. In his book, Danny takes us through his process of making weight and how it connected to his eating disorder. Today we are going to talk more about his book, his successful boxing career, and how he overcame his eating disorder.Danny’s hope is to spread awareness and understanding of eating disorders and to feel less alone if you are struggling with one. Danny encourages prevention and gives permission to not engage in cutting weight in weight class sports. He encourages fueling your body and harnessing skill to be successful and strongly points out that restriction leads to the opposite.Danny also graciously answers some poignant questions including why he’s the only one who has written about this topic, when he first realized he had an eating disorder, whether it’s possible to compete in a weight-class sport without damaging one’s relationship with food or increasing the risk of developing an eating disorder and how weight class sports can change the culture by changing how talk about men and eating disorders. To reach Danny O'Connor: https://www.instagram.com/therealdannyoconnorTo order his book go to his website: www.bitelikeaman.comMy Website: https://www.drhewes.com/My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsarahhewesThe Wise Body YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvOKmICHyAdq22q5Q3usbyASign up for a free consultation call with me:https://www.drhewes.com/contactMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/greenhouse/returnLicense code: QZKDSNZ9WTW7O0ICPodcast editor: Bob Montalban Email: [email protected]

    Let's Be Anti-Diet: A Book Review

After 9 years of grad school, I swore off reading until recently. In Season 2 I am excited to review some of my favorite books in the field. In this solo episode, I share my Five Wise points from Christy Harrison's book called The Anti Diet. She does a beautiful job writing about the roots of diet culture which she found dates back 40,000 years ago. From Ancient Greece and Rome to the Industrial era, Harrison highlights how bodies have become a classist, racist, and sexist issue.Next, we dive into why diets don't work and why they are a problem. And we couldn't leave out how the BMI scale was never intended as a diagnostic tool as it doesn't take into account body composition (ie, muscle, bone density), sex, age, ethnicity, or genetics, and nevermind that it fuels weight stigma.I then dive into a 32 year longitudinal study that erroneously reports "successful" weight loss amongst its participants and how the authors reap financial gain from doing so.We end with the harsh damage of weight stigma which turns out is worse for your health than actually what you eat.And not only is this book awesome, Christy Harrison has a top podcast called Food Psych and you can check it out here along with her book and website.Food Psych YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@christyharrisonThe Anti Diet Book: https://christyharrison.com/anti-diet-book/Website: https://christyharrison.com/My Website: https://www.drhewes.com/My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsarahhewesThe Wise Body YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvOKmICHyAdq22q5Q3usbyASign up for a free consultation call with me:https://www.drhewes.com/contactMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/greenhouse/returnLicense code: QZKDSNZ9WTW7O0ICPodcast editor: Bob Montalban Email: [email protected]

What is Body Image and How to Improve It with Rebekah Doweyko

Ah the ever elusive concept, body image. What even is body image? Does negative body image go away? Will it ever get better? In this illuminating conversation with my friend and colleague, Rebekah Doweyko, we talk about the complexities associated with body image and how to approach the topic with clients who are struggling with negative body image. Spoiler alert, most people, not just those with eating disorders, have some form of negative body image, meaning we don't all love every part of our bodies all of the time... but it becomes a problem when it interferes with your everyday life which might look like canceling plans because you don't want to be seen for fear that others will judge how you look or eating less or exercising more because you want to change the way you look. Body image is multilayered with cultural, societal, relational, and transgenerational influences. It's important to ask how we each experience and define body image, as it can be different for everyone. We also need to treat body image as a chronic, rather than acute, problem. Body image doesn't go away; it persists, but it can evolve over time.So in today's Wise Five we define body image and what contributes to it, talk about the body image continuum, the fears about persistent negative body image, and Bekah's FAQ and how she responds. To reach Bekah:Website: https://bardwellbehavioral.comPhone: (860) 398-9118.Currently accepting applications for therapists who want to learn about eating disorders and are interested in supervision. One of the Greatest Pioneers and Thought Leaders in the Field - An Interview with the GOAT Dr. Margo Maine!

Welcome to the second episode of the Wise Body Podcast! It is only fitting to have the GOAT, Dr. Margo Maine to be my very first guest. No amount of accolades would do her justice. She is one of the most prominent psychologists in the field of eating disorders, with 40 years of experience and author of 8 well-known books. She has received several honorary and lifetime achievement awards for her research and practice. I am lucky to practice alongside her and call her my friend. The Wise Five (Questions and takeaways)- In this episode, I ask Dr. Maine how she came to become an eating disorder psychologist and what keeps her in the field. Shockingly, during her internship years, she was told to find another niche and that eating disorders were just a fad! I am so glad she didn’t believe that, as she’s been a fierce advocate for her patients ever since, fighting for the much needed medical care and insurance coverage they deserve, which is what keeps her in the field.   She also shares her biggest accomplishments, why she wrote a book about hair, and the question people ask her the most, and gives us her answer. It's Just the Beginning - Introducing the Wise Body Podcast and the 5 Most Common Myths About Eating Disorders

Welcome to the very first episode of the Wise Body podcast!! I am so excited you are here with me as we dive into topics related to eating disorder recovery and body health. In this episode I share a little about me, why I decided to do the Wise Body Podcast and the top 5 eating disorder myths I most commonly hear in my practice. Some may surprise you and so I’m here to break it all down in a way that makes sense. The Wise Five: In each episode I ask 5 questions and present 5 takeaways. Here they are from Episode 1: The Top 5 Eating Disorder Myths Debunked. Here are the Sparknotes but for more please listen in!Eating disorders are just a fad or a phase- There most certainly are not. They are a serious psychological, medical and emotional disorder that often requires treatment of some kind. They have the highest mortality rate of any psychological disorder behind opioid disorders. Eating disorders don’t discriminate- They affect all races, ethnicities, genders, socio-economic status. People with food scarcity can also struggle with eating disorders. Many people with eating disorders don’t feel “sick enough” and invalidate their own experience. All too often, people with eating disorders say this, and it is so dangerous because it sustains the eating disorder, which can become life-threatening even if one feels “fine.” Normal labs indicate health- not true! Many people with normal bloodwork can die from an eating disorder. Normal labs may indicate the body trying to overcompensate for malnourishment.A low heart rate means I’m a good athlete. Many athletes I’ve worked with have told me their medical providers have said this to them, but what is often missed is asking questions about food intake and eating disorder behaviors. We need to ask the hard questions. My Website: https://www.drhewes.com/My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsarahhewesThe Wise Body YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvOKmICHyAdq22q5Q3usbyASign up for a free consultation call with me:https://www.drhewes.com/contactMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/greenhouse/returnLicense code: QZKDSNZ9WTW7O0ICPodcast editor: Bob Montalban Email: [email protected]
