It's Not Bad Behaviour — It's Their Nervous System: Supporting Neurodivergent Kids at Home & School with Meredith Dawson Can't you just sit still? Can't you talk less? Just calm down. Meredith Dawson heard those messages all through school, and at almost 54, she still feels them land. Today she's turned that experience into her life's work. Meredith was one of my very first guests on this show, and I'm so honoured to have her back. She's a well-being educational consultant, classroom teacher, and the founder of Thriving Life Co. and Wild Wonder. She has spent over 25 years in education, from early childhood and owning her own daycare to teaching in the school system. Now she coaches neurodivergent kids, their families, and the educators who support them. In this conversation, we get into what "neurodivergent" and "neuroaffirming" actually mean. We talk about why "bad behaviour" is so often a dysregulated nervous system trying to communicate, and why so many kids (especially our girls) are quietly masking in class and falling apart at home. I share how all three of my kids' dyslexia went unnoticed because they were hiding behind their classmates. Meredith gives us simple, powerful tools to use right away, like the W.A.I.T.pause, breaking tasks into tiny steps, and the reminder to just believe them. We also talk about advocacy: why you don't have to accept "let's wait and see," how small changes in the classroom can transform a child's day, and why it's time for our systems to evolve so every child can thrive, not just survive. Whether you're a parent, a teacher, or someone who still carries the "too much" messages from your own school days, this one is for you. 💡 Key Takeaways Behaviour is communication. Before reacting, ask what your child's behaviour is trying to tell you. Use W.A.I.T. — Why Am I Talking? When a child is dysregulated, more words can feel like fireworks going off in their system. Pause and ask what they need: support, a snuggle, or a high five. Understanding isn't excusing. Offer choices, celebrate when they pick a solution, and still hold the boundary. Believe them. When your child says they're struggling or exhausted, trust it. That's where realistic expectations begin. Break it down. If getting from A to B feels impossible, build the steps: A1, A2, A3. Trust your gut and don't wait. If you're told "let's wait and see," you can push back. Early support can prevent shame that lasts a lifetime. Make tools accessible, not earned. Supports like ear defenders should be as easy to reach as pencils and paper. Tiny language shifts create big energy shifts. A small reframe can turn a reaction into a response.
