Zijn werk zit vol tegenstrijdigheden: hij werkte figuratief maar ook een tijd lang abstract en geometrisch; hij was gevoelig voor zowel de rotzooi als de schoonheid van de wereld om hem heen; hij was enorm sociaal betrokken en geëngageerd, maar keerde zich ook van de wereld af, zeker van de kunstwereld.
