Jephthah’s Tragic Promise & The Bread of Life Discourse | Day 130

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

What are we truly hungry for, and what are we willing to sacrifice to get it? Today in the Book of Judges, we see Israel once again crying out in distress. We meet Jephthah, an outcast turned deliverer, whose military brilliance is overshadowed by a rash and heartbreaking vow. In the Gospel of John, the crowd that Jesus fed yesterday catches up to Him, seeking more physical bread. Jesus pivots the conversation to the eternal, identifying Himself as the "Bread of Life" and challenging them to "eat His flesh and drink His blood"—a teaching so radical it begins to sift His followers.Today’s Scripture:📖 Judges 10–11 – After the minor judges Tola and Jair, Israel falls into deep idolatry and is oppressed by the Ammonites. They turn to Jephthah, a social outcast and mighty warrior. Jephthah attempts diplomacy but ultimately leads Israel to victory—though his success is marred by a vow that costs him his only daughter.📖 John 6:25–59 – Jesus delivers the "Bread of Life" discourse in the synagogue at Capernaum. He explains that just as manna sustained Israel in the wilderness, He has come down from heaven to give eternal life. He emphasizes that true life is found only through a spiritual union with Him.📖 Psalm 59:1–8 – Another "Miktam of David," written when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him. David prays for deliverance from his "bloodthirsty" enemies, acknowledging God as his "High Tower" and laughing at the plots of the wicked because he knows God’s strength.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG 📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF 📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/ 🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT 📧 Questions?
