贾生，指贾谊，西汉著名的政论家、文学家，他提出了很多重要的政治主张，但却遭到了贬谪，一生抑郁不得志。李商隐是想借贾谊的遭遇，抒发自己怀才不遇的感慨。 汉文帝求贤，宣示召见被贬臣子。贾谊才能，确实高明无人能及。只是空谈半夜，令人扼腕叹息。文帝尽问鬼神之事，只字不提国事民生。 汉文帝召见贾谊，谈了一夜的话，仍然不能意识到贾谊的才华；最后一句“不问苍生问鬼神”更是揭露了晚唐皇帝，只顾寻找长生不老药，而荒于政治、昏庸无能的表现。
