据说当年长安有令：禁止和尚午后外出。贾岛做诗发牢骚，被韩愈发现了他的才华，并成为“苦吟诗人”。后来受教于韩愈，还俗参加科举考试。但他天真地以为，凭着自己的才学一定能考上，进入考场，拿起笔就写了一首《病蝉》，大意是说“什么黄雀、乌鸦，都想害蝉。”结果，他被认为是“无才之人，不得采用”，还落了一个“考场十恶”的坏名声。原来这首诗得罪了有权势的人，无可奈何，贾岛只好写下《剑客》来抒发胸臆。
