Su ideología progresista que ha impregnado toda su obra, la propone como una de las mayores exponentes femeninas de la canción protesta. Así, Baez a través de su voz no ha dudado en aproximarse a diversas culturas musicales. De esta música quien en 1963, marchó junto a Martin Luther King contra la segregación racial y fue arrestada años después durante las protestas contra la guerra de Vietnam, escucharemos la pieza Gospel Ship interpretada por Joan Baez.
