Lost and Found by Toni Street which I’m sure needs absolutely no introduction. It’s quite deservedly been one of our biggest bestsellers this season and I’m so thrilled for her. Extraordinary story.
Never by Ken Follett. He started his writing career with thrillers like The Key to Rebecca and The Eye of the Needle, and then went on to do big historical fiction – Pillars of the Earth etc. Now he’s back into thrillers and this one is really terrific – a modern-day political story which takes in a CIA agent on the trail of drug smuggling human traffickers in the Sahara Desert, and tension between China, North Korea and the US (with a woman President in charge) with the world on the brink of nuclear war. It’s a fantastic piece of writing, and the worrying thing about it is that it’s so plausible, with powerful people jockeying for position and prepared to do whatever it takes to deliver on their ideology. I loved it. Huge book – over 800 pages long but you just race through it.
