Episode No. 155 The Joy of Saying No With Natalie Lue
This is a safe space, I promise. Raise your hand if:You have a habit of constantly putting other folks' needs ahead of your ownPeople ask you for favors because they KNOW you'll always say yesThe thought of being honest and saying NO makes you sick to your stomach because you don't want to come across as "mean", so you just go along with the flowYou're chronically exhausted from doing hella mental gymnastics in hopes of anticipating the needs and wants of other peopleYou secretly want to hideout so people stop asking you for help or favorsIf you raised your hand to any combination of these questions, you, my friend, might be a people pleaser. What's that? Well according to Natalie Lue, author of The Joy of Saying No, a people pleaser is someone that “suppresses and represses who they are to please others." Ouch right? If that sounds familiar, don't worry you are not alone. In fact, I am a recovering people pleaser and I learned a lot about why we do it, and how to stop from today's guest, relationship expert-- Natalie Lue. In today's episode, she's getting down to the core of why we people please, how to recognize if you're doing it, how to stop, why no's aren't a bad thing, and how to create and honor boundaries. If you're ready to take back your power and show up as your full self without the people pleasing then today's episode is for you!Episode Show NotesSupport the showThanks for listening to today's episode! Episode No. 154 Doing The Inner Work With Taylor Elyse Morrison
When you hear the phrase #SelfCare what comes to mind?Is it a trip to the mall to spoil yourself rotten? Or how about a nice warm bath with a glass of Black Girl Magic Riesling? For me, self-care is binging episodes of Love After Lockup and eating a $5 holla from Little Caesar's. Judge yo momma! Now there is certainly a time and a place for the type of self-care that's all bath bombs and giggles. But then there are times when the soul yearns for more. Where you are called to get still, be quiet and do the inner work. In today's episode, we're chatting with wellness advocate; Taylor Elyse Morrison about what self-care is beyond face masks and matcha. She's showing us how to slow down, tune in + show up for ourselves in the most loving way. Episode Show NotesSupport the showThanks for listening to today's episode! Episode No. 153 Does That Really Have To Be The Truth?
Lately, my inner critic has been going OFF on me, throwing the classic jabs like;“You’re not good enough”“It’s too late”"You're too old"“You’re doing a bad job”and the list goes on and on. And truth be told, I was starting to believe every single one of those lies. That is until I asked myself two small questions that changed the game--Does any of that have to be the truth? -Is there an alternate set of thoughts I can choose to believe about myself? And asking myself those bad babies nipped my negative self-talk in the bud. If you’re anything like me and struggle with quieting your inner critic, then today's episode is for you (and me).Episode Show Notes Support the showThanks for listening to today's episode! Episode No. 151 How To Show Up And Market Your Business With Asia David
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just put your product, service, or idea out there once, and people just showed up consistently to throw money your way? It would be incredible, but business doesn’t always work out that way. You have to actually market your business. You have to show up on social media, buy ads, create a website, start a yelp page, be a podcast guest, get a booth at a trade show (the list goes on and on)— to get the word out and get sales. Now that doesn’t sound all that sexy now does it? Hell no. Marketing sounds like a whole lot of work + a whole lot of money. And because of that, most entrepreneurs skip marketing altogether and then get pissed when the sales, clients, and opportunities don't show up. The bottom line is that if you want a thriving business, you have to be intentional about marketing. It's the key to not only attracting your dream customers but to building a community of superfans that love to pay you for your work. In today’s episode, marketing maven Asia David is hopping in the podcast guest chair to teach us the basics of marketing and how it doesn't have to be as complicated as most entrepreneurs think it is.Support the showThanks for listening to today's episode! Quick Tip #57 Say It With Your Chest
Just + little are two words that I can't stand. We tend to use them when we're used to dimming our light and downplaying just how dope we are. How would you show up if you own your work, your artistry, your business, your skills + your talents? What opportunities could you attract if you completely eliminated just and little out of your vocabulary? That's what we're talking about in today's quick tip-- how to stop playing small and show up unapologetically even with the words we chose to speak about ourselves + the things we do.The Big Goals Action Plan |The Ultimate Podcast Bootcamp | Show Notes | Instagram | Contact | Website Support the showThanks for listening to today's episode! You’re doing the work. Working hard to perfect your craft. Waking up a little bit earlier and staying up way too late to cross things off your to-do list. Episode No. 144 Big Lessons Series: Don't Be Afraid To Get The Bag
"I already have enough. I should stop being so selfish and just be grateful for what I have.Money is the root of evil.More money. More problems.I’m not good with money. The only way to make money is to work incredibly hard for it."When I tell you I had a toxic relationship with money- I MEAN IT! I was in hella debt- (hello, credit cards and student loan debt🙄). I wasn’t making enough money in my full-time job, so I always had a couple of part-time gigs on the side just to make ends meet. And once I finally started making decent cash there was always an emergency lurking around the corner, so I was constantly draining my savings account. Things got so bad I started to resent money. It was never there for me when I needed it. It was always out of reach. The only way to get more of it was to work harder and sacrifice all of my free time working around the clock. And when I finally had it, I felt like I needed to hoard it because I never knew if or when it would come around again. Living like this had your girl chronically stressed, sleep-deprived, anxious, embarrassed, and utterly exhausted. And with all of that going on, one would think that I would do something to change my circumstances. Maybe go back to school, switch careers, or get a better-paying job. Nope! I did no such thing. Why? Well, because I was afraid to get to the bag! I had so many toxic narratives swimming around in my head that kept me stuck in the struggle. I didn’t believe I could be a good Christian and want more money. I was afraid that having more money meant I was greedy and that I didn’t already appreciate God’s blessings. There was this belief that I had to be a starving artist if I wanted to be taken seriously as an actress, so I did a lot of shows that paid little to nothing. It took me YEARS to finally wake up and decide that I was tired of living paycheck to paycheck, tired of being in debt, and tired of being stressed the hell out. So I started doing the work to unlearn all those stories. Once I decided that money wasn't evil and that I could be a good person and still be financially savvy-- money became my bestie. I was no longer available to the struggle. Money was finally on my side and I started living my best damn life!In today’s #BigLesson, we’re talking about money and how to heal our relationships with it, so we can finally get more of it and not feel one shred of guilt about it. Episode No. 142 Big Lessons Series: You Are On Your Own Timeline
There is this unspoken rule that you have to hit certain milestones by a certain age:You have to be married, have at least one kid and a house by the time you turn 25be established in your career and make a big bag by 30be on the 40 under 40 lists, well, before you turn 40This timeline is cute, but we all know that life doesn't work out all nice and neatly like that. For some of us, life be straight up life-ing. And there is just no way everybody can keep up with this timeline.Maybe you’re 35 and still don’t have kids yet. 23, and you’re still trying to figure out if college is right for you. What if you’re single and live in the city and a house hasn’t even crossed your mind yet? Where does this arbitrary timeline leave the folks that aren’t hitting these supposed milestones on time? Welp, it leaves everyone feeling stressed tf because there's this immense pressure to have it all and have it NOW. Know how I know? Well, because I've been a late bloomer my entire life. I didn't buy a house until I was 36. I JUST had my first baby at the ripe "old" age of 37. Heck, I didn't even learn how to drive and buy my first car until I was 27. I used to feel like a complete failure because I was so "behind". That is until I had the realization that I am in charge of my own damn life. That I get to make up my own rules and live life on the timeline I create. In today's episode, we're exploring how to release ourselves from the pressure to be "on time" and how to start living our lives on our own terms. The Ultimate Podcast Bootcamp | Show Notes + Transcripts | Instagram | Contact Support the showThanks for listening to today's episode! And your future-- do you ever just say thank you for the things that haven’t happened yet but that you’re believing God for? In today’s episode, we’re talking about the power of thank you. You have a new idea and you’re ready to step up to the plate and make it happen. So what do you do? Do you shut them down and do what needs to be done? Well in a perfect world you would but nine times out of ten you start to believe them. Quick Tip #52 What Made You Smile Today?
I am a recovering chronic worrier. Yep, I’m one of those people that constantly worries about every little thing. 🥴Want to know my secret weapon that stops worry dead in its tracks? Gratitude. You know the old saying-- “interrupt anxiety with gratitude”? Welp, it’s true. So true, that I decided to keep a gratitude journal to help me appreciate all the good that was in my life. The thing is that after a while, I started to notice how stale my gratitudes were. My journal was littered with the usual suspects; “Lord I thank you for my home, my health, my car, etc.” while I’m truly grateful for all those things, it was starting to give Blah. That is until Jessica L. Williams from Tech Biz Girl suggested I start writing down all the things that made me smile that day. Small adjustment but a total game changer. In today's #Quick Tip, we're talking about the powering of taking some time to look back at what made you smile and how it helps step your gratitude game all the way up. Quick Tip #51 Say What You Need To Say
When Starbucks messes up your order, do you go back to the store to let them know and ask for what you actually ordered? How about when your boss assigns you yet another project on top of all your other work because they know you're always reliable? Do you speak up for yourself and say "Hey, I'm a bit overwhelmed is there a way I can get some more support?" Or do you just smile, nod, and do the work? What do you do when you start to notice that you've been doing way more housework than your roommate? Do you say what you need to say and have tough conversations? Or is that a struggle for you? If you've been biting your tongue, holding back, or letting things slide to keep the peace, today's #QuickTip is an invitation to say what you need to say. Quick Tip #50 Should I Be Focusing On Instagram Or The Work?
Picture this--You're at your desk getting hella work done. Your coffee is strong, you have some lo-fi beats playing in the background and your favorite candle is quietly flickering. You're operating in your zone of genius and you love it. As you're busy doing your thang, a thought pops up in your head--"shouldn't I be documenting this for Instagram? You kinda dismiss the thought because you're focused and enjoying the work. But the thought pops up again--Shouldn't I stop and create a Reel right quick?" And just like that the pressure sets in-- the pressure to always show up on Instagram no matter what. I used to stop what I was doing to get my Instagram on, but it was so hard to get back into my creative groove. So you know what I started doing? Only documenting or creating for social media when I felt inspired too. Algorithm be damned. And guess what it's been a total game changer! So you have this big idea...To open a cafeLaunch a podcastWrite a bookStart a businessGo back to schoolAnd you're probably thinking..."This is it! This is my one chance to get it right/ make a million bucks/ revamp my career/ have my big break/ be successful/ etc."Now I get it-- your goals are big, and the stakes to make them happen are even bigger. So it's only natural that you want this leap of faith to be an instant success. When you launch, you want to reach a legion of fans. When you submit your book to literary agents, you want them to sign you and give you a contract on the first try.You want a ton of clients, downloads, subscribers, and money. And listen, honey, I don't blame you, but what happens when it doesn't work out like that? When you launch, and you only get two clients or a handful of downloads? Well, the tendency for most of us #GoalGetters is to give the hell up. We hate "failure" with a passion and we'll do anything in our power to avoid it. But what if it didn't have to go down like that? What would it look like for you to release yourself from all that pressure? How would it feel to give yourself some space to experiment and play with your goals and not make them the end all be all? In today's episode, we're taking it back to middle school and we're figuring out how to get a little bit more scientific with our goals and dreams. How to look at failure and success as an experiment so that we can keep going even after facing setbacks. Episode No. 133 Creating Space To Just Be
As much as I'd like to "finish this year strong," your girl is tapping out. I had big plans to do big things by the end of the year, but you know what happened? Life. Nothing terrible happened; it's just that I've had the most profound desire to be still, be present, and slow down. Now don't get me wrong, I love rolling up my sleeves and doing the work just like the next #GoalGetter, but recently, I've wanted nothing more than to just be. Be human. Be still. Be quiet. Have fun. Get rest. Watch movies, bake cookies, and love on my family and friends. So instead of spending the final days of 2021 grinding, selling, meeting, newslettering, Instagramming, and recording, I'm creating space to be. So what does that mean? Welp, it means that today is the final episode of the #SJSPodcast of 2021. I'll be returning with fresh new episodes on January 9th, 2022. Aside from announcing my month-long hiatus, in today's episode, I'm sharing why it's so essential for all of us to press pause + get back in alignment with our why.Topics Discussed In Today’s Episode:What does "finishing the year strong" mean for youWhy exhaustion isn't the badge of honor, we think it isHow to tap back within + silence all the outside chatterWhy slowing down isn't a bad thingUpdates about the podcast in 2022 The Goal Getter Sessions | Show Notes + Transcripts | Instagram | Contact Support the showThanks for listening to today's episode! Episode No. 132 Speak It Series: I Know What To Do + I Trust Myself
Picture this:It's time for you to make a pretty big decision in your life or business. What do you do? Do you call your momma and sister on a three-way to hear what they think? Or do you hop on Google and start devouring every single article you can find to help you come up with an answer? Or are you more of a-- sign-up for every course, masterclass, or training-- type of person? Why do you think you do that? Well, I think I have an answer because I just did all of that recently. One reason that you keep looking to everybody else for guidance is that you're too afraid of the answer that's right there inside of you. You know the answer I'm talking about. The one that requires you to show up more, enforce your boundaries, take a leap of faith, and ask for more. We love saying, "I don't know what to do," when the truth of the matter is that often we know exactly what to do, but we're afraid to even go there because we've failed before. We don't trust that we can make good decisions, so we hope some person, place, or thing can make it for us. In today's episode, we're exploring the affirmation-- "I know what to do, and I trust myself." This episode is for you if you're ready to deepen your connection with yourself and start finding the answers within.Thank you to today's sponsor-- Inner Workout!Instead Deck By Inner Workout | The Goal Getter Sessions | Show Notes + Transcripts | Instagram | Contact Support the showThanks for listening to today's episode! Quick Tip #47 Create A Mini Paid Offer
This one is for my content creators/ creatives/ artists/ online teachers:Your audience loves your work-- they like every picture, watch every video, join every Instagram live, and download every episode. Your superfans adore you and all that you do. But what if I told you that your long-time audience is ready to do a little bit more to support you? Ok, so hear me out. The work that you put out into the world is super powerful:it inspiresmotivatesteacheshealsand entertainsYour work makes a huge impact on your audience's lives, and while liking and sharing is a great way to show love, some of your superfans wish there was a way to be a major blessing back. And do you want to know one of the best ways to create an even energy exchange with your audience? It's by creating opportunities for your people to pay you. Whether it's from a merch line, workshops, e-books, mini-courses, or masterclasses, etc. Your audience wants to pay you for your work. Why? Well, because consuming constant free content starts to create a lopsided relationship with your audience. You're the one always giving, and they would love to even the playing field by being able to give back to you by paying for your work. Your job is to create a way for them to do it. In today's Quick Tip, I'm sharing why all artists, creatives, content creators, etc., need to start creating paid offers and why you're audience can't wait for you to do it! Guess what you still get to make your free stuff; I just want you to start getting paid for some of your work! Quick Tip #46 Schedule Yourself A Hard Stop
When your to-do list is a mile long, it's so easy to fall into the trap of working until the point of exhaustion. I get it; I hate leaving unfinished tasks on my to-do list. So what do I do? I work until the wee hours of the morning until everything is crossed off. I used to think that was cool until I realized that my life was bigger than my work. That there were other things, I wanted to do besides working around the clock. So in the name of work-life balance, I decided to give myself a hard stop. That's right, when the clock hits 5 pm every day; I am DONE. No more-- "well, let me just go for one more hour"-- once it's time to get off of work, I'm OFF. And making that shift in my business has been the biggest blessing EVER! So in today's #QuickTip, I'm challenging goal getters to schedule in a hard stop so you can get to living your best, full, multifaceted life! The Goal Getter Sessions | Show Notes + Transcripts | Instagram | Contact Support the showThanks for listening to today's episode! Have you ever felt ashamed for wanting what you truly desire? More money, a nicer home, true love, your dream job? Where does that shame come from? What if I told you that you are allowed to want what you want-- that there is no dream that is too big, wild, extravagant, or "silly" to come true. Quick Tip #45 Be Your Own Biggest Fan
When it comes to your life and work, who is your worst critic? Is it your Instagram followers? How about your customers? What about your peers? You're probably shaking your head no because you know that it's you. YOU are your harshest critic. You shoot down your ideas, pick apart your work, and your self-talk game is so negative it wears you out most days. How about everyone else, are you as critical? Nope, chances are you become a superfan! You have no problem sliding in your faves DMs to sing their praises. Every time they post a picture, you're double-tapping with the quickness. When they drop new merch, your credit card can't get out of your wallet fast enough because you're so happy to support. And ain't nothing wrong with that, gone head and spread the love. But when it comes to you and your work, where's that same energy, boo? You spend so much of your time fangirling everyone else you forget to be your own biggest fan. So in today's #QuickTip, we're talking about the importance of recognizing your worth and value and why cheering yourself on is non-negotiable. Quick Tip #44 Take The Damn Selfie
Picture this--One day you wake up in the morning, get dressed, and walk past your mirror. You catch a glimpse of yourself, and you think, "damn, I'm kinda cute. Let me take a picture!". Feeling yourself, you take your phone out and start taking all the selfies. As you flip through the footage, your selfies are dope af! So you open up Instagram, load them up, and just as you're about to hit the post button, something happens. All of a sudden, you start to think:I shouldn't post this. What if I don't get "enough" likesDamn, I should take this down; I still haven't lost any of pandemic weight. I don't want anyone to see me like this. Why am I posting this? I don't want my followers to think that I think I'm the ish.And so you don't hit publish and just let your selfie sit on your phone until the end of time. Not to get all deep, but sometimes not posting our selfies or sharing our content is a telltale sign of a lack of confidence. Do you hide when it's time to market your business? Dim your light out of fear of outshining others. Silence yourself when it's time to share your story? I wonder what would happen if you were to own your greatness? To post whatever you wanted whenever the hell you felt like it. Wouldn't it feel good to finally be able to show up and not be ashamed of who you are and what you have to offer? So in today's Quick Tip, I'm challenging all #GoalGetters to post the damn selfie even when it feels cringe because small steps like that will help you be the bold, confident, capable, and talented #GoalGetter you are! ❤️The Ultimate Podcast Bootcamp |Show Notes + Transcripts | Instagram | Contact Support the showThanks for listening to today's episode! Episode No. 127 The Power Of Time Blocking
Raise your hand if you have a to-do list. 🙋🏾♀️Now raise your hand if it's currently kicking your ass. 🤦🏾♀️Mmmm, I see, I'm not alone. Now clap your hands if you've scheduled time and space in your calendar to complete your tasks. 🤐Damn--crickets. 😵💫Please don't feel bad because I wasn't time blocking all that hard either. It wasn't until I started reading Nir Eyal's "Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life"; that I got my act together. You see, I was making a major productivity mistake. I'd just wake up in the morning, make a mile-long to-do list and stare at my computer overwhelmingly. I'd get so frustrated because I had so much work to do but couldn't for the life of me figure out where to start. Well, time blocking stopped all that jazz. Once I started time blocking, I knew exactly where to put my focus. I was organized, efficient, and at peace. Wouldn't it be nice if Beyonce stumbled across your product? Or how about Oprah? What if she read your new book and posted it on her Instagram? Can't you just hear the cha-ching sounds? Me, too! And while it would be amazing to be endorsed by a heavy hitter, the truth of the matter is that life doesn't always work like that. Until you can get a seat at the table with the big dawgs, you might have to start building with the people that are right across from you— your peers. In today's episode, we're chatting about the importance of networking across. You know— partnering, bartering, building with people at the same stage of the game with you. You don't have to wait to be discovered. You and your business besties can help one another get to the next level. Episode No. 125 It's Not A Coincidence
The books you're reading. The new people you're gravitating towards. The "random" things that have been piquing your interests lately-- guess what? That stuff isn't showing up in your life just for the hell of it. It's hard to see it while you're in it, but all of those “coincidences” are weaving themselves into a larger thread of purpose in your life. For example, that book you're reading might remind you how much you love writing and inspire you to take a creative writing class. In that class, you might meet the next best literary editor that helps you craft your novel. You might be sitting at your favorite quiet cafe, and you overhear someone say that they work in publishing, and you work up the nerve to shoot your shot, and voila, the rest is history! There is so much magic happening around us, but we don't even realize that it's happening because we're so busy life-ing. But I bet when you take a closer look, you see that everything, the good, the bad, and the ugly, was working out for your greater good + leading you to a path that was tailored made for you.
