João Botelho, realizador e argumentista, nasceu em Lamego em 1949. Frequentou o curso de Engenharia Mecânica da Universidade de Coimbra e a Escola de Cinema do Conservatório Nacional. Trabalhou em artes gráficas, fez crítica de cinema, e iniciou a carreira de realizador em 1976. Primeiro documentários e depois a estreia nas longas metragens em 1981 com "Conversa Acabada", um filme sobre a correspondência entre Mário de Sá-Carneiro e Fernando Pessoa. Para preparar este filme teve acesso à tão falada arca com os manuscritos de Fernando Pessoa.
