João Gesta nasceu em Matosinhos, em 1953. Dos anos de infância em Matosinhos recorda as assimetrias sociais, que lhe entraram pelos olhos adentro através, por exemplo, de alguns amigos de infância que andavam descalços, ou que encontravam na escola a única refeição durante o dia, pão e leite. Esse enquadramento deu-lhe uma consciência social que mantém até aos dias de hoje. Trabalhou na área do comércio de madeiras durante mais de 20 anos. Teve duas empresas, viajou mundo fora, mas faltava qualquer coisa, e é aí que entra a poesia. Deixou definitivamente o trabalho do comércio de madeiras para se dedicar exclusivamente à cultura no ano 2000. Primeiro com algumas experiências em bares e galerias de arte da cidade do Porto, depois, a partir de 2002, como programador do Teatro do Campo Alegre, onde assume a direção artística das Quintas de Leitura, esse caso raro de sucesso na literatura portuguesa, que esgota mensalmente um auditório com bilhetes pagos para ouvir e ver poesia. É um homem livre, apologista da liberdade livre de que falava Rimbaud, e encontramos essa liberdade na forma como encara e programa os espetáculos de poesia: não apenas um guião poético, mas um cruzamento de várias artes, que se interligam e se acrescentam, onde também deve existir espaço para o absurdo e o inesperado.
