In this chapter, we are introduced to Jesus as the Word—eternal, divine, and present from the very beginning. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). We see that He is the source of life and light, and that light shines in the darkness. We also see the powerful truth that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14), meaning Jesus came to live among us so we could know God personally. This chapter also introduces John the Baptist, who points others to Jesus, and we see the first disciples begin to follow Him.
