Born in 1800, Jordan B. Noble was enslaved to a Lieutenant in the 7th Regiment of the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. At the age of 14 he was pressed into service as a drummer boy under the common of Major General Andrew Jackson. Almost 900 enslaved people and volunteer free men of color were among the forces marshalled to defend against the British invasion of New Orleans. As drums were used to direct the flow of battle, it was said that Noble’s talent at keeping a loud and steady beat through the din of musket and cannon fire was vital in maintaining the discipline of the defending soldiers. A natural leader Noble’s military career would continue through the in Seminole War of 1836, the Mexican War of 1846 and the American Civil War in 1861. At age of 90 Noble passed away as an honored war hero known as the Drummer boy of New Orleans.https://www.nps.gov/jela/index.htmThe Joy Trip Project celebrates Black History Month.
