Friends of the Rosary, Today is the Memorial of St. Benedict (480-547), who founded the monastic life, rule, and wisdom in Christianity. St. Benedict's intercession can release our faith. His medal reminds us that we are protected by Christ's power. It's one of the oldest and most honored medals used by Christians. It's also a "devil-chasing medal," as it has power against evil. The reverse side of the medal carries the Vade retro Satana ("Begone, Satan!") formula, which Christians have used to ward off evil since the 15th century. The formula is sometimes carried as part of the rosary but is also found individually. Catholics are not permitted to perform exorcisms, but they can use the Saint Benedict Medal, holy water, the crucifix, and other sacramentals to ward off evil. The Saint Benedict Medal in the middle of a Celtic Cross is believed to be a powerful tool against evil influences.
