The two titles focus on Mary's spiritual martyrdom and her sufferings with her Divine Son.The feast dates back to the 12th century and was especially promoted by the Cistercians and the Servites. The Church is one Body, and suffering borne with Christ can become communion rather than isolation.Our Lady of Sorrows is the patroness of people named Dolores, Dolais, Deloris, Dolorita, Maria Dolorosa, Pia, and Pieta.In Italy, the title of Our Lady of Sorrows is Maria Santissima Addolorata. She is the patron of many Italian cities. Friends of the Rosary,The Catholic Church celebrates today the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, also called the Triumph of the Cross, Elevation of the Cross, or Holy Cross Day. Observed in Rome in the seventh century, this feast commemorates the recovery of the Holy Cross, which St. Helena had placed on Mount Calvary.Our Mother Church sings of the triumph of the Cross, the instrument of our redemption. To follow Christ, we must take up His cross, follow Him, and become obedient until death, even if it means death on the cross.We identify with Christ on the Cross and become co-redeemers, sharing in His cross.When Moses lifted up the bronze serpent over the people (as we read today), it foreshadowed salvation through Jesus, who was lifted up on the Cross.When we make the Sign of the Cross, we give our entire selves to God — mind, soul, heart, body, will, thoughts. Friends of the Rosary,In today’s Sunday Gospel, from St. Matthew 18:21-35, we hear the story of the merciless servant, whom we all might judge as a mean, heartless man.But we'd better stop and think for a moment that we ourselves may be that merciless servant described in the parable.Every time we sin, we incur a debt to God’s loving, infinite mercy. Then can it happen that we can be so heartless and foolish as to refuse to forgive a neighbor for some offense he has committed against us?Will it be the fate of all unforgiving Christians a deserved punishment of the merciless?That day has not yet come for us. And we still have time to put our affairs in order.We can still forgive all our enemies from our hearts. If we do not, we are cutting ourselves off from the possibility of having our own sins and offenses forgiven by God. We might then have the word of our divine Lord, as we read in today's parable: "So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”Also, September 13 marks the fifth apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, which occurred in 1917 at Cova da Iria in Fatima, Portugal.An immense crowd of around 30,000 to 40,000 pilgrims accompanied the three shepherd children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—to the site, hoping for a glimpse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.Around noon, after a flash of light, the children saw Mary appear above the Holm oak tree. Our Lady told the children to continue praying the Rosary daily to bring an end to World War I. Friends of the Rosary,Today, we observe the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, which celebrates the great privileges given to Mary and all the graces we receive through her intercession. The Hebrew name of Mary, Miryãm (in Latin, Domina), means lady or sovereign.We call Mary our Lady as we call Jesus our Lord, and when we pronounce her name, we affirm her power, implore her aid, and place ourselves under her protection.The feast of the Holy Name of Mary therefore follows that of her Birthday, as the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus follows Christmas.In accordance with Jewish custom, our Lady's parents named her eight days after her birth and were inspired to call her Mary. Mary invites us to call upon her name frequently and persistently, for she delights to hear and answer our prayers. To say her name is to express a word of hope. And this word of hope proclaims our salvation, for Mary was created to be the Mother of our Savior. Saint Bernard wrote,"Look to the star of the sea, call upon Mary in danger, in distress, in doubt, think of Mary, call upon Mary. May her name never be far from your lips, or far from your heart … If you follow her, you will not stray; if you pray to her, you will not despair; if you turn your thoughts to her, you will not err. Friends of the Rosary,Nearly 3,000 souls perished on September 11, 2001, in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, including 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel, followed by thousands more responders whose later illnesses stemmed from their selfless recovery efforts at Ground Zero.Today, 25 years after those horrific terrorist attacks, we honor those we lost and the legendary courage of our first responders — we must never forget."Twenty-five years later, its memory lives on; in a new skyline, in simple plaques and great memorials, and in the photographs of first responders who were lost, still displayed outside of firehouses and police stations," Archbishop Ronald Hicks of New York said in a statement. Friends of the Rosary,Today, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Peter Claver (1581-1654), who dedicated himself to the service of black slaves. For thirty-three years, he ministered to slaves, caring for the sick and dying and instructing them through catechists. Through his efforts, 300,000 souls entered the Church. He is the Patron of the African Missions, proclaimed in 1896 by Pope Leo XIII.Born of a distinguished family in Catalonia, Spain. He became a Jesuit in 1604 and left for Colombia in 1610. At that time, Cartagena was the principal slave market for the New World. Thousands of blacks were brought there, herded into warehouses, and auctioned to the highest bidder. Captured in Africa, these slaves were chained in groups. Their treatment was so inhumane that 1/3 of the slaves died on the sea journey.It was to these people that Peter would minister. He would meet each slave ship as it arrived. Peter would go to the warehouses and bring them food, water, medicine, and clothing, for, as he said, "We must speak to them with our hands, before we try to speak to them with our lips." But most of all, he brought them, God. While nursing them back to health, he would teach them of Christ, explain to them that they were loved by God more than they were abused by man, and that evil outraged God. He offered their only consolation: hope in God's promises. Nearly three hundred thousand of them received baptism at his hands.After twenty-seven years of devotion to the black slaves, St. Peter Claver died in Cartagena on September 8, 1654. Leo XIII canonized him on January 15, 1888, proclaiming him special patron and protector of the negroes. Friends of the Rosary,Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We rejoice in her birthday, as the Church has done from the earliest times. In Mary, all human nature is exalted.This is one of the three birthdays in the Church Calendar—the Birth of Jesus (December 25), the Birth of John the Baptist (June 24), and the Birthday of Mary. All three were born without original sin, although Mary and Jesus were conceived without sin, and St. John was cleansed of original sin while in the womb at the Visitation.Mary was "of the lineage of Abraham, born of the tribe of Judah and of the progeny of King David, from whom the Son of God was born, made man by the work of the Holy Spirit, to free humanity from the ancient bondage of sin," the Roman Martyrology states.Mary, the spiritual mother of all men, was born to be the mother of the Savior of the world and the holiest of God's creatures.Because of her Son's infinite merits, she was conceived and born immaculate and full of grace.Through her, Queen of heaven and of earth, all grace is given to men, and by the will of God, we receive the gift of faith to grow in likeness of their Head, Christ the Lord.Let us often call upon the Blessed Virgin as "Cause of our joy", one of the most beautiful titles in her litany. Friends of the Rosary,Today, on Labor Day in the U.S., we read in the Gospel (Luke 6:6-11) how the Pharisees plot against Jesus because he healed a man on the Sabbath.Meanwhile, Saint Paul warns against (1 Corinthians 5:1-8) letting the “old yeast” of sin spread in the community.Christ the Lord encourages us not to hide behind appearances or rules. He chooses what restores life, showing that mercy and healing are always at the heart of God’s law.Bishop Barron explains,“This Jesus was the friend of the marginalized, the healer of the disabled and the sick, the advocate of the forgotten, the forgiver of sins. His mission was to carry the fire of divine mercy to all those who were cut off from it.”“In doing so, he excited the wrath and opposition of the powerful, all those whose status depended upon an ideology of violence, differentiation, and exclusion. When he was born, Herod trembled, and when he came on the public scene, Pharisees schemed and protectors of the establishment plotted to do away with him.”“In the end, he was put to death by a conspiracy of the secular and religious authorities, and, in his moment of greatest danger, he was betrayed, denied, and abandoned by even his dearest friends. Jesus did not simply die; he was executed, eliminated. Friends of the Rosary,Christ the Lord was challenged by the Pharisees, being asked why he didn't encourage fasting among his followers, as we read today (Luke 5:33-39). His answer, in typical Jewish style, came with another question:“Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?”This image of the wedding feast appears frequently in the New Testament, most notably in the Cana wedding narrative.Jesus is the wedding of heaven and earth, the marriage of divinity and humanity. Christ is the bridegroom, and the Church is the bride. Friends of the Rosary,In the Gospel (Luke 4:38-44), Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law and many others, then continues His mission of preaching the Kingdom of God.Meanwhile, Saint Paul (1 Corinthians 3:1-9) warns against jealousy, rivalry, and attachment to human leaders rather than to God.One person plants, another waters, but God gives the growth.We must let God be the one who gives the growth. We can serve, help, pray, and work, but the fruit belongs to Him.Jesus heals, restores, and sends us beyond comfort into mission.As the Psalm reminds (Psalm 33:12-13, 14-15, 20-21), the Lord sees every heart and is the true help of His people.Prayer for tomorrow: Lord Jesus, heal what is weak in me and free me from jealousy or pride. Saint Paul says (1 Corinthians 2:10b-16) that the things of the Divinity are understood through the Spirit.God’s Spirit helps us recognize what is true. Jesus’ word has real power to free, heal, and command the darkness to leave.Therefore, we ask to be filled with His Spirit. Friends of the Rosary,In the Gospel today (Luke 4:16-30), Jesus, while facing resistance from his own townspeople, announces His mission: good news to the poor, freedom to captives, sight to the blind, and liberty for the oppressed.We are invited to receive Jesus as He truly comes, not only as we expect Him to come. God’s word may challenge familiar ideas, but it also brings freedom, healing, and truth.Meanwhile, Saint Paul, in the first reading (1 Corinthians 2:1-5) reminds us that faith does not rest on clever words or human wisdom, but on the power of God. The Psalm teaches love for God’s commands, not as a burden, but as wisdom and guidance.As a prayer for today, we ask Lord Jesus to open our hearts to His word. Help us trust not in human wisdom, but in His power. Give us humility to receive Him, courage to follow Him, and love for His commands.Also today, the Roman Martyrology commemorates Saints Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who showed courage and devotion to Christ after His death.Joseph, a "noble counselor" and disciple of the Lord, awaiting the kingdom of God, went to Pilate to ask for Jesus' body. Nicodemus, who once came to Christ secretly, now came openly, bringing myrrh and aloes. He was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin, which was the ruling body of the Jews. He came to Jesus at night asking questions about his mission. In the presence of the Sanhedrin, who wanted to seize Jesus, Nicodemus defended his cause. They are mentioned in the Gospels.They received the dead body of Jesus, deposited from the cross, wrapped it in linen, and placed it in a tomb owned by Joseph. Together, they offered Christ a dignified burial, acting out of love when others had withdrawn in fear. Their actions, though simple in appearance, were precious before God and became part of the path to the Resurrection.Their example teaches that love for Christ must move us to act with courage and faith, even when it is difficult or uncertain. Friends of the Rosary,In today's Gospel, from Matthew 16:21-27, we learn that because sin entered into the world before the Incarnation took place, the Son of God in his human nature had to suffer the violent death of the cross at the hands of sinners."Jesus began to show his disciplesthat he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatlyfrom the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,and be killed and on the third day be raised."From all eternity, this was God's plan for mankind. Jesus came to die in the Cross. Monica greatly desired that her son become a Christian, and for this she labored long—praying, pleading, weeping.To her joy, Augustine was baptized in Milan by Saint Ambrose at the age of thirty-two. She died in Ostia in 387. Augustine praised God for his mother: “Graciously you heard her, and you did not despise her tears when they flowed down from her eyes and watered the earth beneath, in whatsoever place she prayed.”St Monica was born in Tagaste, northern Africa, and died in Ostia, near Rome. Monica was a Christian, but her husband Patricius was a pagan and a man of loose morals. Monica's virtues and prayers, however, converted him, and he was baptized a year before his death. When her son, Augustine, joined the Manichean sect and went astray in faith and morals, Monica's tears and prayers for her son were incessant. She followed him to Milan, where Augustine went to teach, and there continued to storm heaven with her prayers for her son.In today's readings from the Gospel, Saint Paul reminds the Corinthians that God has enriched them with grace and will keep them firm to the end. In parallel, Jesus tells His disciples to stay awake and be ready, like faithful servants waiting for their master. Friends of the Rosary,Today, we celebrate the memorial of St. Maximilian Kolbe, "a martyr of love," as St. Pope Paul VI described him, whooffered his life in exchange for the life of a husband and father of two sons, on August 14, at the German Nazi concentration and death camp of Auschwitz in Poland. The Polish 47-year-old Franciscan Conventual priest was killed by the Nazis with a lethal injection on August 14, 80 years ago.St. Kolbe, the founder of the worldwide evangelization movement, Militia Immaculatae, and a missionary in Japan in the 1930s, faithfully followed the path of Christ’s sacrifice and His words in John’s Gospel: “No one has a greater love than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends” –that we read today.The priest was arrested in February 1941 on charges of aiding Jews and the Polish underground and was imprisoned in Warsaw. He was deported to the death camp of Auschwitz, Poland, where he was stripped of his Franciscan habit and assigned prisoner number 16670. He was forced to do the most humiliating jobs, such as carrying dead bodies to the crematorium. Nevertheless, he continued his charity and priestly ministry, for which he was subjected to violent beatings by the guards.At the end of July 1941, when a prisoner escaped from Auschwitz, in retaliation, the deputy camp commander picked up 10 men to be starved to death in an underground bunker to deter further escape attempts. When one of the selected men, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out, "My wife! My children!", Kolbe volunteered to die in his place, arguing he was a Catholic priest and older than Gajowniczek, 41. The deputy commander accepted the offer.The Polish priest and others were thus locked up in the "starvation bunker" without food and water. There, Kolbe led the prisoners in prayer. Prison guards found him standing or kneeling in the cell and looking calmly at those who entered. After they had been starved and deprived of water for two weeks, only Kolbe remained alive.The prison authorities administered him a lethal injection of carbolic acid. Kolbe is said to have raised his left arm and calmly waited for the injection. Before dying, he pronounced the two words, “Ave Maria”, the final pledge of a life entrusted to the Immaculate Conception. His remains were cremated on 15 August, the feast of the Assumption of Mary.During his visit to Poland in 2016, Pope Francis visited the " starvation bunker " on July 29, where Kolbe breathed his last in Auschwitz. Friends of the Rosary,Today, August 11, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Clare of Assisi (1194-1253), a virgin and a most perfect follower of St. Francis of Assisi, who practiced a life of entire poverty.At the wish of St Francis, she established a community of nuns in the small convent of San Damiano — the Order of Poor Clares — and acted as their superior for forty-two years — her own life serving as a constant sermon for her sisters to emulate.Their Rule included austerities, walking barefoot, sleeping on the ground, keeping perpetual abstinence, and making poverty the basis of their lives. St. Clare died on August 11, 1253, and was canonized two years later.The Breviary says of her:"When the Saracens were besieging Assisi and were preparing to attack the convent, St. Clare asked to be assisted as far as the entrance, for she was ill. In her hand she carried a vessel containing the blessed Eucharist as she prayed: O Lord, do not deliver over to beasts the souls that praise You! (Ps. 73). Protect Your servants, for You have redeemed them by Your precious Blood. And in the midst of that prayer, a voice was heard, saying: Always will I protect you! The Saracens took to flight."Heroic in suffering (she was sick for twenty-seven years), she was canonized only two years after her death.In our twentieth century, there still remain large areas with millions suffering under extreme poverty. Poverty in itself is no virtue, but it should be made into a virtue. Christ was poor. His entrance into the world and His departure from it took place in circumstances of greatest need. He had no house wherein to be born, no crib; no house wherein to die, no deathbed. Poverty stood watch at birth and remained to see His death. "The foxes have dens, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head" (Matt. 3:20).At least, we can be moderate and frugal, and thereby find the way to the spirit of Christian poverty. Friends of the Rosary,The Catholic Church celebrates today, August 10, the feast of Saint Lawrence (d. 258), a deacon of the Church in Rome, known for serving the poor and for giving his life as a heroic martyr.He was arrested under Emperor Valerian in 258, laid upon a gridiron, and slowly roasted to death. In the midst of excruciating pain, he prayed: "Lord Jesus Christ, God from God, have mercy on Your servant!"At a certain point, the soldier Romanus exclaimed: "I see before you an incomparably beautiful youth. Hasten and baptize me." He had observed how an angel dried the wounds of Lawrence with a linen cloth during his passion.Lawrence died praying for the conversion of the city of Rome, in the hope that from it the faith of Christ might spread throughout the world. From that time, idolatry began to decline in Rome.This young deacon and heroic martyr is counted among the saints most highly venerated by the ancient Roman Church. Next to the feast of Sts. Friends of the Rosary,In the Gospel today (Matthew 14:22-33), Peter walks on the water toward Jesus, doing what seems impossible, as he keeps his eyes on the Lord. “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was, he became frightened;and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter,and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” We see in this passage how, when Peter noticed the wind, fear trapped him, and he began to sink.That is very human. We begin with faith, but then fear gets loud: problems, weakness, uncertainty, family worries, money, health, temptation, the future. Peter’s prayer is simple: “Lord, save me.” And Jesus reaches out immediately.When fear starts to pull us under, let's call on Jesus. He received the Rosary from the Blessed Mother in the woods of Toulouse, in France.This 13th-century Spanish priest, born in Caleruega, Burgos, in 1170, emphasized scholarship and poverty. His mission was simple but demanding: preach the truth of the Catholic faith with clarity, holiness, poverty, and love for souls.He lived during a time when many people were confused by false teachings, especially in southern France. Dominic did not want preachers who loved winning debates more than saving souls. He wanted men formed by prayer, study, humility, and sacrifice.Dominic's instrument for saving souls and bringing people back to Christ through Mary was the Rosary—through meditation on the mysteries of salvation and preaching rooted in prayer.St. Dominic is a saint for times of confusion. Friends of the Rosary,Today, memorials of Saint Cajetan, Priest, and Saint Sixtus II, Pope and Martyr, and his Companion Martyrs, the Lord reveals to us powerful truths (Matthew 16:24-28):“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.What profit would there be for one to gain the whole worldand forfeit his life?Or what can one give in exchange for his life?For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory,and then he will repay each according to his conduct.”In this passage, Jesus makes the lesson plain: following Him is not just admiring Him, believing correct things about Him, or enjoying moments of spiritual light. It means taking up the cross with Him.“Deny yourself” means dethroning the false self: pride, comfort, control, resentment, vanity, the need to win, the need to be seen.That line, “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it,” contradicts the extended idea, even in Christianity, that life is not about preserving comfort at all costs. It is about giving yourself away in love, obedience, humility, and fidelity. The paradox is that this surrender does not destroy us. Friends of the Rosary,We celebrate today, August 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration, an event described in the three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 17:1–8, Mark 9:2–13, Luke 9:28–36) which foretells the glory of the Lord as God and His Ascension into heaven.In the gospel accounts, Jesus and three of his apostles, Peter, James, and John, went to a mountain (the Mount of Transfiguration) to pray. On the mountaintop, Jesus began to shine with bright rays of light. Then the Old Testament figures Moses and Elijah appeared, and he spoke with them. Both figures had eschatological roles: they symbolize the Law and the prophets, respectively. Jesus is then called "Son" by the voice of God the Father, as in the Baptism of Jesus.The Transfiguration anticipates the presence of heaven, where we shall see God face to face.From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #554, we learn:"From the day Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, the Master began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things... and be killed, and on the third day be raised.Peter scorns this prediction, nor do the others understand it any better than he does. In this context, the mysterious episode of Jesus' Transfiguration takes place on a high mountain, before three witnesses chosen by himself: Peter, James, and John. Jesus' face and clothes become dazzling with light, and Moses and Elijah appear, speaking "of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem".A cloud covers him, and a voice from heaven says: "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!"Thomas Aquinas considered the transfiguration "the greatest miracle" because it complemented baptism and revealed the perfection of life in Heaven. Friends of the Rosary,We celebrate today, August 5, the Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the four most illustrious churches of Rome, along with St. John Lateran, St. Peter, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major.The Basilica of St. Mary Major was built at the indication of the Blessed Mother after the miracle of the snowfall that took place on the night of August 4 - 5 in the year 358.The Virgin Mary had announced it in a dream to two faithful Roman Christians, the patrician John and his wife, as well as to Pope Liberius.The basilica was completed a century later, after the Council of Ephesus in 431 declared Mary the Mother of God as dogma.Yesterday, during the pontifical Mass in Rome, a traditional shower of flower petals descended from the basilica's ceiling to commemorate the August snowfall of 358.The memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major is also known as Our Lady of the Snows.Our Lady of the Snows teaches that grace can appear where it seems impossible, even “snow” in the heat of summer. The Pharisees focus on external tradition, but Jesus points deeper: what comes out of a person reveals what is inside.Also, today, August 4, we honor Saint John Vianney (1786-1859), also known as the Curé of Ars. Born in France in 1786, during the French Revolution, he was sent as a parish priest to Ars, a small village that was spiritually lukewarm. Here he spent forty-two years of his life, devoting himself to prayer, mortification, and pastoral works.His success in directing souls made him known throughout the Christian world. Men of all ranks and conditions of life sought his guidance and advice.He would spend many hours each day in the confessional, sometimes 12 to 16 hours, helping people return to God.His holiness was pastoral and merciful. Friends of the Rosary,Today's Sunday readings speak about God feeding His people. In the first reading (Isaiah 55:1-3), God invites everyone who is thirsty and hungry to come to Him. He offers what truly satisfies, not just food for the body, but for the soul. Many things promise to fill us, but only God can give peace that lasts.Saint Paul also gives a beautiful reminder (Romans 8:35, 37-39): nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Not suffering, weakness, fear, or hardship. God’s love is stronger than all of it.The Gospel (Matthew 14:13-21) shows Jesus feeding the five thousand. The disciples see the crowd and think only of the problem: too many people, too little food. Five loaves and two fish look small, but in the hands of the Lord they become enough.Our faith may feel small. Our patience may feel small. Our strength may feel small. But when we place it in Jesus’ hands, He can multiply it.We bring Jesus what we have, even if it is small. Friends of the Rosary,Today, August 1st, is the Memorial of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, founder of the Redemptorists, and a great teacher of moral theology.He is especially known for preaching God’s mercy. He dedicated his life calling people back to God’s mercy.Born near Naples, Italy, in 1696, he became a lawyer while still young, but later he gave his life to God as a priest.He preached in a way ordinary people could understand. He cared especially for the poor, the abandoned, and people who felt far from God. In 1732, he founded the Redemptorists, a religious congregation dedicated to preaching the Gospel, especially to the poor and neglected.Saint Alphonsus Liguori had a deep love for Mary and wrote The Glories of Mary. He promoted prayer, confession, devotion to the Eucharist, and trust in Jesus. He suffered many illnesses and difficulties later in life, but stayed faithful.He died on August 1, 1787. He was canonized in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871.Saint Alphonsus Liguori, pray for us. Friends of the Rosary,Today, July 31st, we honor Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) as the saint of the day, a Spanish Basque soldier, mystic, and priest who founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and wrote The Spiritual Exercises.In the year 1521, at the siege of Pampeluna, a cannonball fractured the left leg of Captain Ignatius Loyola, the future founder of the Jesuits. While he was convalescing, Ignatius read about Christ and His saints and thus turned wholly to God. He went to Montserrat, and hung up his arms before the altar of the Blessed Virgin, entering upon his knighthood in the army of Christ. He then equipped himself for Christ's service by acquiring a good classical and theological education.God favored and refreshed him with such wonderful spiritual lights. He patiently endured sufferings and insults in every place, undergoing the hardest trials, even imprisonment and beatings almost to death. But he ever desired to suffer far more for the glory of his Lord.At Paris he was joined by nine companions from that University, men of different nations, who had taken their degrees in Arts and Theology; and there at Montmartre he laid the first foundations of the order. Among them, St. Francis Xavier was sent to preach the Gospel in the Indies. He dispersed others of his children to spread the Christian faith in other parts of the world, thus declaring war against paganism, superstition, and heresy.God raised up Ignatius and the Society of Jesus to oppose Luther and the heretics of his time, as formerly he had raised up other holy men to oppose other heretics.The members of the Society of Jesus became the shock troops of the Church in the battle against the spread of Protestantism in Europe, as well as one of the greatest foreign mission organizations that the world has known.Ignatius everywhere opened schools for the education of youth in piety and letters. St. Philip Neri and others saw his countenance shining with heavenly light. And his power over the demons was wonderful.Ignatius died on July 31, 1556, at the age of sixty-five.Since then, St. Ignatius is celebrated for miracles and for his great services to the Church.In today's Gospel (Matthew 13:54-58), Jesus returns to His native place, and the people are astonished by His wisdom. But instead of receiving Him, they reduce Him to what they already know: “Is he not the carpenter’s son?” Familiarity closes their hearts. They cannot accept that God is working through someone so close, so ordinary, so known to them.That is a warning for us. God may speak through ordinary people, ordinary duties, ordinary prayers, and ordinary moments. If we only expect God in dramatic signs, we may miss Him when He comes quietly.Saint Ignatius of Loyola fits beautifully with today’s message. His life was reshaped by God after injury, ambition, and conversion. He learned to discern God’s voice, to seek God’s will, and to find God in all things.Let's listen when God corrects us. Do not reject truth because it is uncomfortable or because it comes through someone familiar. At the end, there is a separation between what is good and what is bad.Jesus said to the disciples:“The Kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,which collects fish of every kind.When it is full they haul it ashoreand sit down to put what is good into buckets.What is bad they throw away.Thus it will be at the end of the age.The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteousand throw them into the fiery furnace,where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”This parable is not meant only to frighten us, but to wake us up. Friends of the Rosary,Today, in the Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, the Church remembers three siblings who were close friends of Jesus. Their home in Bethany was a place where Jesus was welcomed, listened to, questioned, and loved.That is a beautiful image of Christian life: not only praying in church, but letting Jesus enter the real home — with its work, worries, grief, conversations, and meals.Martha shows faith in action. She serves, she speaks honestly, and in John’s Gospel she makes one of the strongest confessions of faith: “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God.” She is not only the busy sister; she is a woman of courage and belief. Even while grieving Lazarus, she still comes to Jesus.Jesus told her,“I am the resurrection and the life;whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die."Mary shows love that listens. She sits at the Lord’s feet in Luke’s Gospel, receiving His word. In John’s Gospel, she brings her sorrow directly to Jesus.Lazarus shows the power of Christ over death. He does not speak much in the Gospel, but his life becomes a sign.We want to welcome Jesus into the whole house of your life. Friends of the Rosary,Today, Christ the Lord (Matthew 13:36-43) explains the parable of the weeds in the field."He who sows good seed is the Son of Man,the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom.The weeds are the children of the Evil One,and the enemy who sows them is the Devil.The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire,so will it be at the end of the age.The Son of Man will send his angels,and they will collect out of his Kingdomall who cause others to sin and all evildoers.They will throw them into the fiery furnace,where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.Then the righteous will shine like the sunin the Kingdom of their Father.Whoever has ears ought to hear."As we learn from the Lord, good and evil grow together for a time, but not forever.The Lord is patient.
