He preceded the Redeemer, representing the Old Covenant and the Law and heralding a new dispensation of grace.The nativity of John is observed six months earlier than the birth of Christ, at the time of the summer solstice. The popular custom, centered on "St. John's Fire," symbolizes Christ the Light.
