Sin separates us from God, and justice demands that sin be punished. But here is the beautiful gospel message: God, in His great love and mercy, has made a way for us to be justified—declared right in His sight—not because of our works, but through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Justification is a legal term meaning to be declared righteous. Next, we come to regeneration, which means being made alive. Spiritually speaking, before coming to Christ, we are dead in our sins. The spirit within us is lifeless, unable to connect with God. But when we put our faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to life within us, making us spiritually alive. New birth refers to the transformation and renewal that happens when we are united with Christ.
