K2C 29 – Mormonism, the Matrix and Me – Chapter 23: No Middle Ground

from Kolob to Calvary's podcast · host Tracy Tennant

Can Mormonism withstand careful investigation? In Chapter 23 of Mormonism, the Matrix and Me, Tracy Tennant and her husband Scott meet weekly with their home teacher, a respected attorney in their ward, hoping to carefully examine the questions that had begun troubling them about the LDS Church. The goal of these discussions is simple: determine whether the historical and doctrinal concerns they've encountered can be reasonably explained. But as the weeks pass, Tracy and Scott become increasingly discouraged. Instead of thoroughly researching the issues, their home teacher seems more interested in defending the Church than in honestly investigating the evidence. The conversations begin to feel less like a search for truth and more like a courtroom defense. For Scott, the realization becomes unavoidable. If the truth claims of Mormonism ultimately rest on the story of Joseph Smith, then the question cannot remain unresolved. Either Joseph Smith was truly a prophet of God—or he was not. After months of discussion and growing frustration, Scott finally reaches a painful conclusion: he can no longer accept the LDS Church as true. Soon afterward, he asks to be released from all of his church callings. This episode is part of the audiobook series presenting Tracy Tennant's book Mormonism, the Matrix and Me, which chronicles her journey out of Mormonism and into biblical Christianity. The book Mormonism, the Matrix and Me is available on Amazon for those who would like to read the full story.
