If Scripture alone is the law, who gets to decide what it means? For Karaites, authority is both simple and complex—rooted in the Hebrew Bible, but always negotiated by learned interpreters and communal councils.The written word stands at the center, but the question of who interprets it has shaped Karaite life for centuries. The core sacred text for all Karaites is the Hebrew Bible, known as the Tanakh. They do not accept the Mishnah, the Talmud, or rabbinic codes as binding law. Instead, Karaites create their own secondary literature: legal treatises, commentaries, and even polemics. Two of the most influential works are Aaron ben Elijah’s Etz Hayyim, written in the fourteenth century, and Elijah Bashyazi’s Aderet Eliyahu from the fifteenth century.
