Twee minuten stilte, dat doet wel wat met je.Phew, that commemoration on May 4th is always impressive. Two minutes of silence, that really affects you.Mieke: Zeker. Absolutely. It's good to reflect on history. Yes, and I suddenly thought: we talk a lot about the Second World War, but what about the history of slavery? I've been hearing more and more about that recently.Mieke: Dat klopt. That's right. There's been much more attention and awareness for it in recent years. It's also a very important and painful part of Dutch history. Yes, I did learn about that in school, but... that was a long time ago. The Netherlands had colonies, didn't it?Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Especially in Suriname and the Antilles. Hundreds of thousands of people were brought from Africa to those areas and had to work there as slaves on plantations.Bram: Wauw, honderdduizenden... Wow, hundreds of thousands... That's truly a crime against humanity.Mieke: Absoluut. Absolutely. The conditions were terrible. People didn't live freely and were seen as property. This lasted for hundreds of years.Bram: En wanneer stopte dat? Wanneer was de afschaffing? And when did that stop? When was the abolition? Die dag noemen we 'Keti Koti'.Slavery was officially abolished on July 1, 1863. We call that day 'Keti Koti'.Bram: Keti Koti. Die naam heb ik weleens gehoord. Wat betekent dat precies?Keti Koti. I've heard that name before. What exactly does that mean? It means 'the chains are broken' in Sranantongo, the language spoken in Suriname. It's a day of commemoration, but also a celebration of freedom. Okay, July 1st. But why am I hearing so much about it specifically in the last few years? It was a long time ago, wasn't it?Mieke: Omdat er een grote maatschappelijke discussie over is. Because there's a big societal discussion about it. And very importantly: the Dutch government officially offered an apology for the history of slavery at the end of 2022.Bram: Oh ja! Dat was met de minister-president, toch? Dat heb ik gezien op het nieuws.Oh yes! That was with the Prime Minister, wasn't it? I saw that on the news.Mieke: Klopt, Mark Rutte. That's right, Mark Rutte. And on July 1, 2023, the King, Willem-Alexander, also offered a very personal apology. He showed a lot of regret.Bram: Echt? The King too? That's a big gesture. I seem to have missed that. Yes, that was a historic moment. It shows that the Netherlands now looks differently at its own history and acknowledges the pain.Bram: Dus even checken... So, just to check... Keti Koti is the commemoration of the abolition of slavery?Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. The 'commemoration' is reflecting on history. And the 'abolition' is the official end of slavery. Another important word is, of course, 'the apology', the apology from the government and the King. For your KNM exam, this is an important topic. Pay close attention to the date: July 1st. You often get a question like: "What do we commemorate on July 1st?" The answer is then the abolition of slavery, or Keti Koti. Okay, clear. So if I get a question about Keti Koti, I need to know: July 1st, the commemoration of the abolition of slavery. And recently there was ...
